Chippenham Park Wilts 3 Rink league side visited Broughton Gifford on Monday evening the 4th June.
Although the home side were minus several regulars, the best result of the season was attained, in scoring the maximum possible ten points on offer. Rinks and scores: Neil Parkinson, Ted Jones, Vince Davis and Trevor Cooke 21-20: Mervyn Davies, Hayden Arlett, Barry Freeman and Kevin Holmes 20-16: Graham Whitfield, Ray Thomas, Pete Rigby and Neil Yeoman 19-15.
The ladies welcomed Box Bravos for a Nor-West League fixture the following day. The match finished at one rink each, with the result going in favour of the home side, which finished with a 12 shot and a 4-2 point advantage. The rink of Sue Davies, Nicole Palmer and Sylvia Davis were in good form throughout, winning 31-13 in fine style.
Calne’s Recreation Ground was the venue for MWTL leaders Broughton on a still, overcast evening on Thursday 7th. The game was keenly contested throughout and the final outcome was in doubt until the last bowl had been delivered. Traversing the Rec Club and changing rooms, a much-improved green played well with a medium fast pace, which was a pleasure to play on. Calne were ahead by two shots after six ends and four shots after twelve ends.
With three of the four rinks having completed their eighteen ends, Broughton had tied a rink and were winners on two rinks. The match result however, was hanging in the balance, with the visitors having the last bowl on the last end. Three shots were required to secure an overall victory but in spite of Broughton’s best efforts, the scoring of a single shot wasn’t enough to win the match. The game finished with Calne having a winning margin of 70-68 shots and a score of 9-5 points. Rink scores: Richard Mizen, Keith Darby and Graham Whitfield 21-19; Richard Brooks, Mervyn Davies and Paul Stocker 12-20; Trevor Gardner, Hayden Arlett and Steve Hockings (capt) 24-20; Tony Day, Tony Stanley and Pete Rigby 11-11.
Visitors are always welcome at Broughton Gifford and can be assured of a warm welcome. The green can be found behind the Bell on the Common public house. Forthcoming home games: Sat 23 June at 2.30pm, Mon 25 June at 6.30pm and Sat 30 June at 2.30pm.
