MELKSHAM Carnival makes its long-awaited return this month, and its committee is promising the biggest procession ever!
This year’s procession will be held on Saturday 25th June; the first procession since 2019 – and it would appear the long wait between processions has got people more eager than ever to get involved.
“We have been contacted by so many more people that have decided that this is the year they want to get involved,” said Beth Dark on behalf of the carnival committee, “which we think is down to the lockdown restrictions. But, the more the merrier – we are not complaining!”
Alongside carnival regulars, such as the carnival royalty, Melksham Rugby Club and Meads of Melksham, a whole host of new arrivals will be joining the procession.
“We’ve had whispers of big lorries that just want to be in the procession because they are pretty,” said Beth, “and loads of tractors want to also be involved, which is wonderful. We also have dance groups, bands, all lined up to take part – everything is going really well, it’s all coming together and looking really good. It’s shaping up to be biggest ever carnival procession with more entries than ever.”
About what people can expect this year, Beth said, “People are keeping things under wraps, they haven’t told us much, they want it to be a surprise on the day – and we have a few organisations that are quite competitive, so I’m sure they have big plans. I know that Meads of Melksham – whose Greatest Show-themed entry wowed the crowds in 2019 – have been planning their entry for quite a while.
“Proud Melksham will be taking part for the first time this year – and we are hoping to see lots of rainbows and glitter from them. And we have got a little surprise from the Melksham Lions that is guaranteed to put a smile on people’s faces – that’s all I can say!”
There is still time to register to take part in this year’s carnival and the committee is also looking for volunteers to help marshal at the procession.
Beth says, “Entry into the carnival procession is free and it’s a really good way to showcase your business, charity or organisation. We are always looking for marshals to help manage the road closures.”
