Carnival royalty to attend Family Fun Day

A FAMILY Fun Day will take place at Spencer Sports and Social Club on Saturday 22nd August to raise money for Helping Harry.

Family and Friends of 2-year-old Harry Kirkman who has cerebral palsy, are raising money to help him have the best chance of a normal life.

The event starts at 2.30pm and is set to be packed with lots of fun things for the family. There will be a bouncy castle, face painting, pig racing, hook a duck and a raffle. There will also be a DJ and a visit from Melksham Carnival royalty.

  • Gompels launches innovative prescription system Gompels has launched an innovative new state-of-the-art system for residents to collect their prescriptions at its pharmacy at Spa Medical Centre. The new system, the first of its kind in the country, aims to reduce waiting times and improve the efficiency of the pharmacy. Patients with a smartphone are sent a text message with a QR code when their prescription is ready to collect. On arrival, they scan the QR code at a screen in the waiting room, notifying the pharmacist to bring out the prescription. “Thirty-five per cent of our patients are already using this new system. It’s straightforward, simple, and is reducing waiting times, queues and stress for both pharmacists and patients. It’s working really well,” explained pharmacist Marilyn Stapleton.   • Liberal Democrats to gain control of Melksham Town Council The Liberal Democrat group is set to gain control of Melksham Town Council after the town council elections on 1st May, following the release of the official list of candidates An election will take place in only one ward – Melksham North – after the number of candidates standing in the remaining wards did not exceed the number of available seats. As a result, the other seats will be filled unopposed. Of the candidates elected unopposed, seven are from the Liberal Democrat group, two from the Conservative party and one is an Independent. This marks a shift in the political makeup of the council. At the last elections in May 2021, the Together for Melksham group held a majority, which was later succeeded by the Conservative group during the council term.   • Melksham Titanic family remembered in pop-up exhibition The Melksham family, who died aboard the Titanic, are being remembered throughout April with a display at the town’s pop-up museum in the town hall. In April 1912, the Goodwin family, from Melksham, had planned to emigrate to Canada aboard the Titanic. Traces of the family were lost when the ship sank after striking an iceberg, except for the youngest child, Stanley, who was only recently identified through DNA testing. Stanley’s story is featured in the book Titanic’s Unknown Child by Carol Goodwin, the great-niece of Frederick Goodwin, father of the Goodwin family.   • Successful fundraiser for church choir ahead of leader’s retirement The choir of St Michael’s Church in Atworth recently held a successful fundraiser ahead of the choir leader’s retirement at Easter. The event, held on Friday 14th March, raised £1,900 to help repair the church’s tower roof. Proceeds came from ticket sales and donations, and alongside the choir, there were also performances from local residents who read poetry, played instruments and sang. The choir’s next performance will mark the end of choir leader Helen Snowball’s many years with the group as she prepares to step down from the role. “We’re enormously grateful to Helen for her hard work and for putting up with us for so long,” explained choir member David Hough.   • Exciting new season at local Golf Club Advertisement feature Westbury Golf Club is swinging into the new golf season with exciting developments, including the appointment of a new PGA Golf Professional, the opening of a pro shop, and the much-anticipated re-opening of the club’s driving range. Appointment of a golf professional and the opening of a pro shop Chris Tyson has been appointed as the PGA Golf Professional and Coach, opening an on-site pro shop. He is now available for lessons for both members and visitors. Chris started playing golf and competing as an amateur in North Yorkshire in the 1980s, where he was fortunate enough to be coached by Steve Robinson, the current performance coach for Matt Fitzpatrick and the England women’s national squad. Chris turned professional in 1991 and qualified as a PGA Golf Professional in 1994; following which he has competed in and won a range of local, regional and national tournaments, including competing in the Volvo PGA Championship at Wentworth.   • Melksham vape shop served with second closure order A melksham vape shop has been issued with a second three-month closure order at Swindon Magistrates Court, following the sales of illegal tobacco. The order was granted on Friday 28th March under the Anti-Social Behaviour Crime and Policing Act after a closure notice was served by Wiltshire Council’s Trading Standards team, following a test purchase of illegal tobacco. The shop at 7 Bank Street, Melksham, previously operating as Milksham Vape & Shop, was previously ordered to close for three months on 11th December 2024. The closure order was instigated following a number of complaints, several seizures of illegal tobacco and vapes, plus test purchases of illegal products.   • New pop-up garden opens in the Market Place A new pop-up garden has been installed in the Market Place and is now open for residents and visitors to enjoy. The garden, installed by Melksham Town Council, features a seating area and plants and will be open from April to the end of October. A spokesperson for Melksham Town Council said, “Located in the heart of Melksham, the pop-up garden has been designed to complement the vibrant atmosphere of the Tuesday Market and the Makers’ Market. “This new addition aims to create a more engaging and lively environment, encouraging both residents and visitors to spend more time in the Market Place.” Buskers are also invited to contact Melksham Town Council for the opportunity to perform in this lively new setting.   • Friends of Shurnhold Fields raise funds for vital equipment The Friends of Shurnhold Fields are running a fundraiser to purchase essential equipment to help carry out maintenance work on the town’s ‘mini country park.’ As a group of dedicated volunteers, the Friends devote many hours to maintaining the area at Dunch Lane and making it accessible to the whole community. However, they are now reaching out for support in raising funds to purchase equipment and fund future projects. “The Friends of Shurnhold Fields are a small volunteer group that helps to maintain the fields for everyone to enjoy. We plant, stake, and prune trees, plant native bulbs, and mow paths,” explained volunteer Donna Hambly. Keen to ensure that the local community can experience the tranquillity and nature of the area, the Friends have worked on projects such as growing over 200 trees from saplings and creating a World War I memorial area, with each tree representing a lost son of Melksham and the surrounding villages.   • Trustees take on endurance feats to support Evie’s Gift Two trustees of a Melksham charity are set to take on endurance challenges to raise funds for families of critically ill children. David and Lisa from Evie’s Gift will each take on separate challenges to raise funds for the charity, which provides immediate and practical support to families with a critically ill child in hospital, including help with hotel accommodation, food, and travel costs. To raise funds, David is undertaking an ultra-walking challenge, pushing himself to his physical and mental limits to highlight the urgent need for support. “David has taken on tough challenges every year to raise money for Evie’s Gift, and this year he’s pushing himself further than ever before,” explained charity manager Jess Hilsdon.
