Children at St Mary’s School in Broughton Gifford have raised over £400 for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust in support of a fellow pupil who has the condition.
During cystic fibrosis (CF) awareness week last month, pupils dressed in yellow, held a bake sale and listened to an inspiring talk by their fellow pupil, Sophie Maidment, who is in Year 4 and has cystic fibrosis.
“Sophie and her family have been a real inspiration to the school as she takes the challenges she faces in her stride and has the confidence to share her experiences to educate her fellow pupils,” said a member of the school’s team, Charlotte Haines. “On the awareness day she presented a talk to each of the classes and was happy to answer the questions of other children about living with the condition.”
Cystic fibrosis is a rare inherited genetic condition that causes breathing and digestive problems. The symptoms of cystic fibrosis are managed through daily medications along with physiotherapy and regular hospital visits.
“One of the particularly difficult aspects of the condition for children is that they cannot meet, or go to school with, other children with CF. This is because people with CF can have infections in their lungs which are harmful to other people with the condition,” said Charlotte.
“Events like this remind us how lucky we are to be part of such a wonderful small school community, seeing Sophie being supported by each and each one of the pupils, staff, friends and family was inspiring and really quite moving.”
