Christmas lights once more a target for thieves

MELKSHAM Christmas Lights volunteers have expressed their anger after thieves stole power cables from this year’s display.

Shortly after the Christmas lights switch-on last month, volunteers discovered that thieves had ‘ripped away’ and stolen a power cable and two control box units, used to power the Christmas lights on the town bridge.

Speaking to Melksham News shortly after the items were stolen last month, one of the volunteers, Peter Reynolds, said, “Naturally Paul Weymouth and his team of volunteers are not pleased with the damaged caused. The equipment that has been stolen is expensive, and we will have to see if Paul is willing to risk replacing the stolen items. 

“Last year it was only the power cable that was stolen. The bridge lights are very secure, as they require several bodies working as a team to fit and remove.

“A big thank you from the Melksham Christmas Lights Team to the massive crowd that turned out to see the lights switched on. The Melksham Christmas Lights team get a big buzz from the enjoyment and fun that the crowd get from this occasion. We can only hope that this year’s 2020 lights will stay untouched and again provide enjoyment to all who come for the switch-on.”
