COMMUNITY groups will have the opportunity to bid to take over two local red telephone boxes for their own use.
It has been suggested by the town council that the phone boxes – located on Spa Road, opposite Giffords Surgery, and Littlejohn Avenue, next to the Pig and Whistle pub – could be used by local groups to share information or promote themselves
Successful groups, chosen by the town council’s asset management and amenities committee, will take it turns to use one of the phone boxes.
The two telephone boxes were adopted by the town council from BT last year. Initial ideas for their use included using them as a permanent “information hub” for young people, and as a permanent space for plants – but plans were put on hold in March until after the local elections in May.
In addition to allowing local groups to use the phone boxes, the town council has suggested that they could also be used as local Wi-Fi hotspots.
