THE Melksham community has reacted to the break in at the scout and guide hut earlier this month, saying the damage caused by vandals was ‘disgusting’ and ‘disgraceful.’
Vandals broke into the building, that is used for the scouts and guide weekly meetings and activities, on 30th September /1st October spraying graffiti on the walls, destroying artwork the groups had created and urinating on the floor.
Melksham Police said three men were arrested on suspicion of the burglary, with the investigation still continuing.
On Melksham Police’s Facebook page one resident said, “So disgraceful to wreck one of the only places that kids in Melksham can use to get together.”
Sergeant Gemma Rutter who leads Melksham Community Policing Team spoke to Melksham News and said, “We were truly disgusted with what we found on site with graffiti on every wall and urine on the floor and surfaces. The scout hut is a place where people who want to contribute to society go to learn life skills and build friendships.
“Thank you to everybody who gave us information, commented and shared our post. It has been great to see the community pull together over such a deplorable incident.”
Melksham Scouts ‘thanked’ the community for their support, saying, “The out-pouring of kindness has been overwhelming. Seeing our town pull together in response to such a mindless act proves that thankfully people that did this to such a valued resource are very much in the minority.”
