AN application to build nine houses on land to the south of First Lane, Whitley, has been withdrawn.
The proposal by Ashford Homes, which emerged in the summer last year, attracted strong objections from Shaw and Whitley residents, who raised concerns that the development would be in a declared ‘flood area’ and that the new homes could ‘exacerbate’ the area’s ongoing flooding issues.
The reason for the withdrawal of the application has not yet been made public.
Other concerns raised included its impact on local traffic, and the movement of the settlement boundary that would be necessary, as the site sits outside the current boundary.
Over 50 residents formed the action group, First Lane Action Group (FLAG), to fight the application and local group CAWS (Community Action: Whitley and Shaw) also opposed the proposal. Melksham Without Parish Council also objected to the application.
