Coronavirus grant helps Melksham air cadets stay on parade at virtual meetings

The cadets of 2385 Squadron ATC in Melksham at their sole meeting between lockdowns in December

MELKSHAM air cadets at risk of being left isolated and lonely by three successive lockdowns are staying connected with their comrades, thanks to a coronavirus fund grant.

Wiltshire Community Foundation has awarded 2385 Squadron ATC in Melksham £2,600 from its Coronavirus Response and Recovery Fund to buy laptops and tablets for volunteers to help with virtual parades online.

Commanding officer Greg McKay, who has led the squadron for five years, said it was important to keep it together as much as possible.

“The grant has been really helpful because it has allowed us to get more volunteers leading the meetings. We have been training them to start planning and leading the meetings,” he said. It’s really important for the youngsters to have the contact and inclusion. Probably a third of them don’t engage because they are just overloaded with online stuff,  a third turn up sporadically and then there’s a third who are there every time because they are desperate to do something and see their friends.”

The group’s 50 members usually meet weekly to enjoy activities including adventure training, sport, music, shooting, flying and gliding. It had to stop meeting last March but OC McKay immediately launched the weekly online meetings.

“They were initially for the Melksham squadron but we found out that many of the other squadrons weren’t meeting so we have expanded it to Chippenham, Corsham, Warminster, Bradford on Avon, Malmesbury, Trowbridge and Westbury,” he said.  “We are getting between 50 and 80 cadets at each parade.”

The easing of lockdown in December meant the group did manage to meet once before Christmas. “When we came back the cadets had changed so much – not just the fact that they had grown so much in some cases, but we could see that the impact of nine months of lockdowns on them was very telling,” said OC McKay. “By the time we go back we don’t know how they are going to be.

“For teenagers, when they are going through what they go through anyway, lockdown has been the absolute worst. I hear people compare this to the war and say ‘well I went through that and we just got on with it’. But then there was an enemy you could see whereas this is something where you go outside your house and you might die. You just cannot compare the two things.

“Every structure which young people are used to, school, home, meeting friends or whatever, has just been blown away so anything they knew is gone and I do worry about them.”

The weekly meetings delivered by the squadron’s leaders and volunteers feature cadet-related lessons, quizzes, games and guest speakers. “We do what we can, selfishly because we want the organisation to still be there after the pandemic, but also so the young people can benefit,” said OC McKay.

“We also have a lot of volunteers who give up their time and they want to see each other. After almost every online session the staff stay on afterwards and there’s 25 minutes or so of chat and jokes and it’s a chance for them to unwind. The meetings have a real mental health benefit for them too.”

Many of the cadets come from low income families and the group has provided free T-shirts to those who cannot afford to buy them for their youngsters. Said OC McKay, “It is tough economically for many families in the town and the lockdown just compounds everything.

“We’ve done whatever we can to support them but we know that when this ends there will be whole sections of the local economy that probably will have gone and that will have an impact on places like Melksham. That’s why it is important we are here.”

Wiltshire Community Foundation joint chief executive Fiona Oliver said, “The air cadets are providing friendship, fun and something approaching normality for young people who are living with uncertainty in often difficult circumstances. We are really pleased to support the group and its brilliant work.

“The group will be important to help its cadets ease back into normal life when the lockdown ends, so it is essential it is still around. That’s why our fund remains just as important to the county’s voluntary groups now as it was when we first launched it last March.”

Proposed A350 Melksham bypass: Cabinet agrees to second consultation

  • First consultation on new Wiltshire Local Plan

Residents, businesses and other organisations will have their first opportunity to help shape a new Wiltshire Local Plan next month.

The consultation will be the first formal stage in preparing a replacement for the council’s previous Local Plan, which was withdrawn from examination earlier this year after planning inspectors raised concerns about whether it provided enough housing land, relied too heavily on proposed new settlements and matched development with areas of demand.

The withdrawal has raised concerns that, without an up-to-date Local Plan, developers could find it easier to bring forward housing proposals on sites that have not been allocated for development. There have also been concerns about the weight that can be given to existing neighbourhood plans when planning applications are considered.

The new Local Plan will set out how and where development should take place across Wiltshire, including housing, employment, infrastructure and waste facilities.

We’re incredibly grateful to everyone who has walked through the doors, supported us and helped Wild Ones grow during its first year.

“What started as a line dancing class has grown into a fantastic community of people of different ages and abilities.”

  • Writers launch anthology in aid of food bank

A group for writers in Melksham is publishing a collection of poetry and prose to raise funds for the food bank.

Milktown Writers Group is releasing its first anthology, ‘Condensed’, at the Melksham Food and River Festival, which takes place on 5th and 6th September.

All proceeds from the book sales will be donated directly to the Melksham Food Bank in an effort to support local residents facing food insecurity.

Group member Jade said, “The Melksham Foodbank is a vital local cause which has seen a steady demand for its services in recent years. Every copy of the anthology sold will directly fund food parcels and essential supplies for local families.”

  • Renewed calls for minor injuries unit in Melksham

By Local Democracy Reporter Peter Davison

Calls for the return of a minor injuries’ unit in Melksham has been renewed by local MP Brian Mathew.

The MP has asked Health Secretary Yvette Cooper to support the development of a local minor injuries’ unit in his constituency, at Melksham and Devizes.

Melksham has not had a minor injuries unit for nearly a quarter of a century. The previous unit was closed in 2002.

He said, “Residents here currently have no local minor-injuries unit, meaning that anyone needing treatment for a broken bone, wound or any non-life-threatening injury has to travel to larger hospitals outside our constituency.

  • Teen scooter rider aims for international stage

A junior pro scooter rider from Melksham is aiming to compete in Europe next year after securing strong results in recent competitions.

He also finished third in a separate Scoot GB junior pro competition in July.

The results have helped George gain points towards the European championships, while a high enough placing at the national finals could earn him an invitation to compete in Europe next year.

He said, “I have been riding my scooter for five years. I gained junior sponsorship last year with the clothing brand Smith and Feeble, which moved me into the junior pro category.”

  • 58 new homes approved at Berryfield

Plans for up to 58 new homes on land north of Berryfield Lane have been approved by Wiltshire Council.

Wiltshire Council’s Western Area Planning Committee unanimously approved the outline application, submitted by Martin Grant Homes, at a meeting on 19th August.

The scheme, on 3.7 hectares of agricultural land, will provide 30% affordable housing, with a mix of affordable rent and shared ownership.

The Wiltshire Council officer report recommended approval stating, The very substantial benefits of the proposal - particularly in terms of housing delivery and affordability and safeguarding land for the delivery of the Melksham Canal Link - clearly outweigh the identified harms and the presumption in favour of sustainable development therefore applies.”

The plans safeguard land for the Melksham Canal Link project following previous concerns by the Wilts & Berks Canal Trust. The applicant has revised the plans so the land will be used for surface water attenuation until the canal is delivered.

  • Volunteers reinvigorate village hall in 50th year

A local community hall is marking its 50th year with a series of events and fundraising activities aimed at bringing the building back to the centre of village life.

The volunteer committee behind Shaw Village Hall is planning a series of fundraising events this year as part of a push to boost use of the space.

The committee is currently raising money towards new audio-visual (AV) equipment to enable the hall to host music and film events for children, families and older residents. It has secured a place in the Waitrose token scheme to raise the remaining money needed for the AV equipment and is also raising funds for a car park expansion.

While most of the fundraising events are still in the planning stages, the first will be a free-to-enter Makers’ Market on 6th September from 1pm to 4pm.
