A campaign to support pollinators and increase biodiversity is being trialled in selected areas across Melksham throughout May.
Melksham Town Council will trial ‘No Mow May’ at a number of roundabouts and selected areas including along Hazelwood Road and parts of King George V Playing Fields.
The national campaign, set up by charity Plantlife in 2019, encourages councils, organisations and residents to pause grass cutting throughout May, allowing wildflowers to grow and set seed.
Councillor Adrienne Westbrook said wilding and conservation are important parts of the council’s remit. She said, “However, it must not be seen as a cost-cutting exercise, or it will lose all its impact.
“Areas will be left wild for May to help pollination and insects. These areas will be clearly marked and work will take place around them to keep our roundabouts safe and tidy and our green spaces still available for the public.”
Feedback from residents will be gathered after the trial to assess its impact and decide whether it should be expanded in future years.
