MELKSHAM Town councillor, Adrienne Westbrook, has blasted councillors on Wiltshire Council’s Melksham Area Board for being “anti town.”
Cllr Westbrook, who is chair of Melksham Town Council’s economic, development committee explained that the town council had asked for support to purchase marquees for their market initiative for the town’s Market Place.
She said, “As part of economic recovery, the council are seeking to run monthly markets to enhance the very successful Makers Market that they helped to set up. This will encourage people into the town centre, and then into our shops.
“Perhaps the area board like seeing the Market Place empty, it does belong to the county after all and it cost a fortune to install. Groups were given money for various projects, but the town council were told to raise the precept if they wanted to support the traders.
“Obviously the area board have a different agenda when it comes to supporting the needs of the shop owners who have had to endure so much in the last year. Or was it just that votes were agreed behind closed doors? It all looked just a bit contrived to me.”
