Council’s transport schemes doesn’t include Melksham

WILTSHIRE Council leaders have shortlisted ten potential major transport schemes but two Melksham schemes have fallen by the wayside.

Originally 70 schemes were proposed for the county, including two for Melksham: improvements to signalling at the railway station and a transport package that would see improvements to the walking and cycling network as well as improvements to the roads and public transport.

But the Melksham schemes have lost out.

The ten schemes chosen from the original 70 are; A350 Chippenham Bypass Duelling, A350 North of Chippenham Duelling, A350 West Ashton Relief Road, A350 Yarnbrook Relief Road, A36 Southampton Road Improvement, Corsham Station, M4 Junction 16 improvements, Royal Wootton Bassett Station, Westbury additional platform and Wilton Station.

The list will now be taken to the Swindon and Wiltshire Local Transport Body (SWLTB) which has to approve a provisional prioritised list by the end of July. Swindon Borough Council will also provide a list of ten potential schemes to the SWLTB.

The prioritised list will then be forwarded to the Department for Transport which will chose three or four to be part of a four-year programme of works due to begin in 2015.

Approximately £16.9m of Government funding will be available for the chosen schemes, although this figure could change.

Terry Chivers, Wiltshire Councillor for Melksham Without North was disappointed with the ten listed. he said, “I’m amazed to learn that the duelling of the A350 around Chippenham is a major priority for Wiltshire Council.

“Yes I’m in favour of upgrading this important route between Chippenham and Poole but you have to get your priorities right. We are looking to upgrade an area of Chippenham that has already been bypassed, when we have villages like the small community of Beanacre that are suffering over 188,000 vehicles passing through the village every week.”

Fleur de Rhe-Philipe cabinet member for transport at Wiltshire Council said, “This is all about local decisions being made locally and this is the next stage in a process that we hope will make key improvements to our county in the coming years.”

  • Why making a Will could protect your loved ones – and support local healthcare

RUHX, the official NHS charity of the Royal United Hospitals Bath, is urging local people to make sure they have an up-to-date Will – and to consider leaving a gift that could make a lasting difference for future patients.

More than half of UK adults don’t have a Will, according to the Money and Pensions Service. Without one, it can be unclear what happens to your estate, your wishes may not be carried out, and loved ones could face unnecessary stress.

RUHX says that having a Will is the best way to protect your family’s future – and at the same time, it offers the chance to support causes close to your heart.

“The idea of writing a Will is a serious subject and one that requires much forward planning,” said Jonathan Chase, Gifts in Wills Manager at RUHX."

  • Holt crafters plan new Poppy Cascade and 15ft Christmas tree

Holt crafters are back this year with two big projects – a new Poppy Cascade for Remembrance 2025 and a 15ft Christmas tree made from colourful crocheted granny squares.

The group is busy re-creating and adding to last year’s spectacular Poppy Cascade, which saw more than 4,000 poppies draped from the tower of St Katharine’s Church and a further 3,000 displayed around the village.

They plan to follow this up with a 15ft hand-crafted Christmas tree made from granny squares which will be on show on Holt Village Green throughout December until the new year. Visitors will be able to donate via a QR code at the display.

In the run-up to Remembrance Day, handmade crocheted and knitted poppy brooches and clips will be sold at The Wild Herb café in the village to support the Royal British Legion. The crafters will also be selling festive decorations to raise extra funds for Dorothy House.

Over 80 talented artists and makers will display a wide-ranging array of work from sculpture, textile art and ceramics to printmaking, photography and carpentry.

“There’s something for everybody!” says committee member Chloe Pinheiro. “If you’ve never experienced an open studios trail before, it’s a wonderful way to discover the local creative community, chat to makers in their studios, quietly browse a group exhibition or learn a new art form in one of the many workshops on offer! • Plan to relocate Melksham’s Aldi store moves forward

Plans to relocate Melksham’s Aldi store from Beanacre Road to a new site near the Farmers Roundabout have taken a step forward, with a full planning application now submitted.

The supermarket chain is proposing to build a new single-storey store on the former Countrywide Farmers site on Bradford Road, which has stood vacant since the company went into administration and closed in May 2018.

Aldi says its current store on Beanacre Road, which has traded for more than 15 years, ‘no longer meets Aldi’s needs’ due to its smaller size and limited parking. The proposed development would include a larger sales area, 124 parking spaces, almost double the current number, and improved access.

The retailer has confirmed that all existing staff would be retained, with around 40 additional jobs created once the new store opens. The existing Beanacre Road store will remain open while plans progress.

  • Park Yoga ends after another successful season

Park Yoga has officially ended for the season, after between 60 and 70 people gathered in the King George V Park each Sunday morning this summer to enjoy an hour of stretching, movement and relaxation together.

The free weekly sessions ran from 4th May until the final session on Sunday 14th September.

Yoga instructor Hannah Blueitt said, “It’s been really busy this year and the weather was on our side. I had some lovely feedback and the sessions have built a really nice community together.”

This year’s sessions followed the first successful season last year. Hannah said, “It was nice to see lots of familiar faces this year but we’ve also had so many new people join this year too. There have been people who started it and have been there every week; there were a few people who had only missed one session, it was really nice.”

  • Newly planted walnut tree celebrates international links

A special walnut tree has been planted in the King George V Park by Melksham Town Council as part of a European tree-planting initiative.

The Baum Challenge sees towns nominate each other to plant trees. Melksham was nominated to take part in the challenge by Bradford-on-Avon, which had been nominated by Trowbridge after the town was put forward by its German twin town, Leer.

Each tree planted represents a town’s commitment to the environment and its willingness to collaborate across borders.

Before the screening of the BBC’s Last Night of the Proms in the park on Saturday 13th September, Melksham’s Mayor Saffi Rabey and Deputy Mayor Jennie Westbrook planted a walnut tree, donated by Dick Lovett BMW and MINI Melksham.

Deputy headteacher James Mead said, “We are incredibly grateful to all the parents, the local community and especially our amazing PTA, Forest Friends, for their hard work in organising and running the event. Their support and generosity helped raise valuable funds that will go directly towards enhancing the school experience for our children at Forest.”
