STAFF and residents at a care home in Melksham hosted a Western-themed event to raise money for Huntington’s disease.
Blenheim House, which is part of the Berkley Care Group, hosted over 100 people for a Western-themed How the West Was Won hoedown, which successfully raised £430 for the Huntington’s Disease Association.
“The day featured a series of activities designed to celebrate and educate attendees on the history of America’s Great Prairies,” said Blenheim House’s general manager, Caroline Wood. “Activities included everything from making haystack crispy cakes to learning about the historical interactions between cowboys and Native Americans.
“The in-house catering team prepared a Texan BBQ consisting of pulled pork buns, hot dog subs, and vegetarian options. Beverages were also served from the Mosaic Bar, including beers, wines and soft drinks.
“The event also supported fundraising efforts for Huntington’s Disease, a genetic disorder that causes the progressive breakdown of nerve cells in the brain. This affects an individual’s functional abilities and usually results in movement, cognitive, and psychiatric disorders.
“One of the residents, Sarah, who is affected by the neurodegenerative disease, participated in and enjoyed the festivities. Her supportive husband, Dermot, was also present, providing support throughout the event.
“The event was not just a celebration of history but a powerful gathering to support one of our own community members in her battle against Huntington’s Disease.
“Seeing the community come together to enjoy the festivities and raise funds for this cause was truly inspiring. We are deeply grateful for the generosity and spirit of all who participated.”
