MELKSHAM Cricket Club is hoping for ‘bigger and better things’ for their future as they prepare to officially move into their new home at Melksham House.
Last week, the club began moving into the new pavilion that cost £337,000 as part of Wiltshire Council’s plans for a Melksham campus. The building replaces the one destroyed by fire in June 2016.
The club was given access to the building ahead of the official handover, which is expected to happen in the next couple of weeks, to help prepare for the upcoming season. Club chairman Gary Burns told Melksham News, “The building is great. I would say that we feel spoiled if I’m honest.
“The pavilion destroyed by fire had just been refurbished by the council to see us through to the campus build, so to have money spent on us again, well I think we feel blessed, we have been given a great facility.
“Hopefully the town will get behind the cricket club now, and start investing people and time into the cricket, especially their kids. Cricket as a sport is one of those that are struggling against football and rugby, so fingers crossed. It’s going to be a great facility, we are lucky and blessed.”
Club member Ed Skippings added, “You won’t find many better facilities at this level. Hopefully it leads to bigger and better things for the club.”
The first match planned for the new facilities is a friendly against Beehive Southwick on Saturday 14th April. The first league match at home will take place on Saturday 5th May.
