The team at Beanacre and Melksham Cricket Club has bowled judges over as recycling champions, following its work with recycling programme provider Every Can Counts.
The cricket club, located in Melksham, has worked tirelessly over the past two years to ensure that all drinks cans consumed at matches and practices are responsibly disposed of; taking the number of cans recycled from zero before the initiative, to three or more bin bags full of empty drinks cans now being collected for recycling per week.
Instrumental to the club’s success has been its ‘can do’ attitude and commitment to developing a number of internal and external communication tools. Taking a multi-channel approach, the club uses a combination of email bulletins, improved recycling bin signage, and social media channels – to spread recycling awareness amongst staff, players and club visitors.
Commenting on Beanacre and Melksham Cricket Club’s achievement, the recycling champion and club administrator, Debbie Burns said, “We’ve seen an amazing change in attitudes to recycling since beginning our journey over two years ago with Every Can Counts.
“Carefully disposing of drinks cans and other recyclable waste in a sustainable manner has now become second nature to the club, and it has gone a long way in helping to reduce the amount of general waste we have picked up by the local council.”
Ruth Meeke, programme manager of Every Can Counts spoke of Beanacre and Melksham Cricket Club’s success saying, “We’re thrilled to honour the club’s recycling efforts with this Green Can Award. The ongoing commitment demonstrated by the club and keen use of communication resources is exactly the kind of can do attitude that will help communities make a real difference.”
