MELKSHAM Blue Pool has introduced a ‘dementia-friendly’ swimming session for people living with dementia and their carers.
The session has been created following feedback from carers and those who have dementia in the Melksham area, who commented that swimming was an activity that they used to enjoy, but the environment was now a little too intimidating to visit.
This swimming session is one of the quietest in the current pool programme and staff at the Blue Pool have recently undergone Dementia Friends training to help them accommodate the needs of those who may attend.
Community engagement manager for Melksham at Wiltshire Council, Rhys Schell said, “A huge thank you to the Melksham Blue Pool for their support for making Melksham a Dementia-friendly community.”
The swimming session has been supported by Melksham Dementia Action Alliance, who have been working on a number of different ways to make the town more Dementia-friendly.
The session called ‘Just Swim – Older Adults’ takes place every Monday afternoon between 2.45– 3.45pm.
