Melksham RFC travelled to Devizes last weekend and secured their first win of the season.
Both teams contested strongly for territory. Devizes started out on top as Melksham’s defensive penalty count enabled them to quickly capitalise on errors with six penalty points in the first 30 minutes.
Both teams had fought for the next score, with the visitors needing to get on the board. Melksham then worked their way upfield with the forwards striking from a line-out catch and drive, hooker Aaron Brailey scored a try and Adam Davies added the extras, putting the visitors a point up.
Melksham tried to continue their pressure but also gave away another penalty while defending in front of the posts, gifting the home team another 3 points and the lead. The score was 9- 7 at half time.
The second half started in the same vein with both teams attacking. The difference was that Melksham continued coughing up penalties in kickable areas, gifting another 3 points and again putting the home team ahead.
Then, in the last quarter, Melksham rallied with continued pressure to be rewarded out wide with winger Ben Brown going in for five points to level up the score. With confidence starting to return the visitors got the ball into the hands of their centre David Dyke, who powered his way across the line. Davies added the extras to seal the win 12- 19.
