THERE is still time to  catch the Melksham Lions’ Christmas Float as the group help Father Christmas around the town.

The Lions’ Christmas Float has been visiting various locations around Melksham, giving all children, young and old, the chance to meet everyone’s favourite bearded-man.

Father Christmas and the Lions will be at the following locations:

Saturday 16th & Sunday 17th December: Sainsbury’s – 10am-4pm

Saturday 23rd December: Co-operative Food (Blackmore Road) – 10am-4pm

Sunday 24th December: Lidl – 10am-4pm.

  • Local children enjoy new Awdry Avenue play park at grand reopening The community gathered on a sunny Saturday for the grand reopening of Awdry Avenue play park, where local children had the chance to try out the new equipment. The park reopened on Saturday 1st March, following a refurbishment that introduced a range of new features for children to enjoy, including a climbing wall, a basket swing and a slide. Key representatives from the town were in attendance, including Melksham’s Mayor Tom Price and Deputy Mayor Saffi Rabey, to officially open the new park. The refurbishment was funded by UK Shared Prosperity Fund and the Community Conversations initiative, which provides funding for local projects. Mayor Tom Price said, “It was an absolute pleasure to be able to attend the opening of Awdry Avenue Park. This was a sorely needed upgrade to the Forest community after the previous park had outlived its lifespan. I want to express my thanks to Bridey from Community Conversations for all her support in making this park a reality.   • Enforcement notice issued over unauthorised occupation at Semington mobile home park Following complaints about an unauthorised increase in occupation on Greenacres Mobile Park in Semington, Wiltshire Council has issued an Enforcement Notice on the park’s owner. The site has planning permission for 14 pitches, which constitutes 28 mobile homes for Travellers. However, the council has identified a significant increase in the number of mobile homes on the site, with up to 77 being stored on site. Many of these are also allegedly being rented on the open market to people who aren’t classed as Travellers for planning purposes. Following a formal investigation, the council has now served an Enforcement Notice on the site’s owner to require the number of mobile homes on the site to be reduced, in line with the existing planning permission. The notice was served on 26th February and will take effect on 2nd April. It recognises that different site occupants have different needs and so staggers the times that the occupiers and mobile homes are required to leave the site over the next 18 months.   • Local gaming shop relocates to Chippenham A local gaming and pop-culture collectibles shop has closed its doors and relocated to Chippenham due to a rise in running costs. The Toy Moon, which had been based on Bank Street for the last five years, sells a range of collectible products, including items from Pokémon, Yu-Gi-Oh!, Nintendo and Warhammer. The shop also ran various Lego clubs and Pokémon events, which will continue at their Chippenham site. The shop closed in Melksham on 28th February and held a grand opening in Chippenham on Friday 7th March. The owners explained that they relocated because their five-year lease came to an end, and with the rent rising and a low footfall during the week, it became a ‘struggle’ to keep the shop running in Melksham.   • New community park opens in Melksham A new community park has opened in the heart of Melksham, transforming an unused field behind The Canberra Youth Centre on Spa Road into a green space for the whole community to enjoy. Residents gathered on Saturday 1st March for the opening of The Canberra Centre Community Park, which includes accessible pathways, a community orchard, an edible hedge, a mini arboretum and a sensory garden. The project was a collaboration between 4Youth (South West) and Spurgeons Children’s Charity, both of which use the Canberra Centre. One of the most unique features of the park is its diverse range of trees. “To help visitors appreciate these beautiful trees, a special information noticeboard is planned for installation once funding is secured,” explained Jon Hubbard, chair of 4Youth. The park also includes a community orchard, which in a few years will offer free fresh fruit to visitors, and edible hedges that will produce a variety of fruits for community use.   • Community transport service shares schedule for social trips Melksham Area Community Transport has shared details about the destinations it will be transporting residents to this year. Along with social trips, the service transports passengers to day centres and shopping outlets. “The shopping trips on Thursdays and Fridays continue to be popular, with many people taking advantage of the services,” explained organiser John Ruderman. “We continue to visit either Trowbridge, Chippenham, or Devizes on Thursdays and Melksham Sainsbury’s on Fridays. The bus picks up and drops off at your home, so easy access for anyone. The buses are free to you if you have a bus pass.” Destinations for the service’s well-supported days out this year, which cost £25 per person, are as follows: 12th April, Lymington 10th May, Swanage 7th June, Weston-super-Mare 12th July, Weymouth Read more on our website.   • Court orders two residential addresses to close following drug misuse The court has ruled that two residential addresses will close in Melksham following reports of drug misuse at the properties. Melksham Neighbourhood Police Team applied for the properties to be close at Sangster Avenue and Queensway, following positive drug warrants at the addresses in January. A statement by Melksham Police said, “The orders forbid any visitors at the address except for named persons on the order and will last for three months. The orders will be extended if there is sufficient evidence to show the residents are still negatively impacting their neighbourhood with their behaviour. “Breaches of closure orders can be reported anonymously through 101 or Crimestoppers.   • Free swimming, reablement services and allowances: Councillors ‘disappointed’ over motion decisions Two Wiltshire councillors who represent Melksham say they are ‘disappointed’ with the decisions made on their motions during the council’s recent budget meeting. Cllr Jon Hubbard proposed reinstating free swimming for children and young people during school holidays and also put forward a motion to invest £1.3 million in reablement services to support vulnerable adults in regaining their independence. Both motions were voted against. Cllr Mike Sankey, who represents Melksham East, submitted a motion with Trowbridge Councillor Edward Kirk—both of whom have left the Conservative group in the past year. Their motion proposed changes to how portfolio holders—councillors assigned additional responsibilities for a particular area within the council—are selected. Read more on our website.   • Scouts practice teamwork skills with real-life Monopoly in London Scouts from 1st Bowerhill Scout Group travelled to London recently to play a real-time version of Monopoly to practise their navigation, teamwork and problem-solving skills. The group of 14 Scouts, one young leader and eight adult leaders travelled to London in their scout minibus to play the game along with 8,000 Scouts and Guides from across the country. “Teams have one designated player who logs onto an app,” explained a Scout lead volunteer, Neal Brookes. “This then gives you various places to visit around London.” “The event started in Hyde Park.   • Former Labour Club site for sale A plot of development land in the centre of Melksham is due to go to auction next month. The 0.32-acre site, at 3 Lowbourne, was formerly the site of the Melksham Labour Club, which was demolished and cleared with vehicular and pedestrian access. The site has already been granted planning permission for two schemes to develop either nine three-bed houses or 17 two-bed flats. The site has a guide price of £695,000. The agents, Hollis Morgan, say that given the town centre location and having its own pedestrian access from Bank Street, the site also offers scope for a wide range of potential commercial uses, subject to consents.
