A GROUP of Melksham women are being supported by a heavyweight boxing legend with their charity event, which is aimed at raising funds towards World Suicide Prevention month in September.
Seven times Irish boxing champion, Joe Egan, will join women from Melksham’s On the Block fitness training, as guest speaker; where he will be sharing his journey through his boxing career.
The all-female contestants are currently busy training at The Contender professional boxing gym ahead of the show, which is due to take place at Melksham Assembly Hall, on 3rd September.
The event is the joint venture of Tracy Steel, owner of On the Block fitness training, and Mark Kent, owner of The Contender Gym, based on Avonside Enterprise Park in Melksham.
Tracy said, “None of the women are professional boxers, but they have been training hard to get ready to put on a great family show.
“It takes courage to step into the ring, let alone in front of other people, but these ladies are up for the challenge, as it’s all for such a great cause.
“We are lucky to be able to train out of The Contender, where we can use their great facilities.”
The organisers are now appealing to local businesses to support their initiative by donating prizes towards the raffle.
Tickets, costing £25, can be purchased at the door from 5pm on the evening, or in advance by calling Tracy Steel on 07834 659368. The first fight is scheduled to start from 6pm.
