ATWORTH WI held its first meeting of the year recently and heard from a speaker who once worked as a guide at the British Ambassador’s residence in Washington DC.
Group president Helen Snowball reports, “Atworth WI held the first meeting for 2017 on Monday 16th January at Atworth Village Hall. Several members of the committee were unable to be there because they were doing courses at Denman.
“We decided this year we would have a competition each month and the first one was for the most unusual Christmas card.
“We have also introduced a new letter to be given to new members; along with our usual friendly welcome it will give more information about the group and our WI meetings.
“The speaker this month was Vivienne Penney, the present federation treasurer, who was fortunate to live in Washington DC for four years when her husband was working at the embassy.
“She enjoyed her time there very much and was a volunteer guide at the ambassador’s residence. This beautiful house and garden were designed by Edward Lutchens. Vivienne showed us photographs of the beautiful house and the many paintings that the ambassador’s wife, Lady Manning, chose while they were living there.
“Vivienne had the opportunity to meet several important people during her time there and loved being in Washington DC, where she made many friends.
“We will be doing our next group litter pick in the village on Tuesday 24th January; we meet at 10am at The White Hart.
“Our next meeting will be on 20th February at the village hall in Atworth at 7.30pm. Gillian Bourne will be giving a talk and demonstration on Emmett Therapy. Visitors are always welcome at a cost of £3.”
