OLDER residents of Melksham enjoyed an afternoon of exercise and ‘drumming’ at a free taster session of Wiltshire Age UK’s Fitness & Friendship club at Bowerhill Village Hall.
About the event held last month, which was made possible by grant funding from Melksham Town Council, the club says, “The aim was to encourage more older people to get active, whilst giving them an opportunity to make new friends and try something new.
“The afternoon started with a warm-up of chair-based exercises and then refreshments to give everyone the chance to socialise. This was then followed by Jamma de Samba who came equipped with various instruments (drums and shakers) that were distributed amongst the attendees.
“Everyone was taught how to play their instrument and within a very short space of time, a fantastic samba sound was produced – staff at the local school were spotted dancing in the playground and some local residents came to sit outside the open door to watch.”
The Fitness & Friendship Club is held on alternate Thursdays, 2pm to 4pm, at Bowerhill Village Hall, entry normally costs £5. Upcoming dates are: 16th and 30th June; 14th and 28th July; 11th and 25th August.
