Flags have appeared on lampposts along Eastern Way in Melksham.
The row of Union Flags and St George’s flags appeared on lampposts lining the road on the east side of the town on Sunday 7th September. It reflects a wider trend seen in other parts of the country and has divided opinion, with some viewing them as a show of patriotism and others associating them with far-right demonstrations.
Wiltshire Council confirmed that any unauthorised flags placed on council-owned lampposts will be removed – at a cost to the taxpayer.
Cllr Ian Thorn, Leader of Wiltshire Council, said, “We are aware that flags have recently been placed on some of our lampposts without prior permission.
“Items such as banners, bunting, and flags that are installed on or near the highway can pose safety risks to road users, either as a distraction to drivers, or where close to the carriageway, present the risk of becoming snagged on high-sided vehicles. As a council, we have a duty to ensure that public roads remain safe. They may also detract from the overall tidiness of the area. It is our duty to ensure that public roads remain safe and accessible, and we will take action to remove any unauthorised installations.
“We welcome efforts to celebrate local events, and we encourage community groups, as well as town and parish councils, to work with us when planning displays. However, it’s essential that any promotional materials placed on council land receive approval from the relevant Wiltshire Council highways team beforehand.”
Wiltshire Council has confirmed that no permission was sought for the flags that were installed on Eastern Way, and as a result, they will be removed by the council’s street lighting team in due course.
Any flags that have been removed by the council will be stored safely. People are advised to contact the relevant depot to arrange collection.
