A floral cascade has been draped from the clock tower in Atworth, handmade by the local Women’s Institute (WI) and villagers.
The drape is made up of around 1,400 flowers, 300 leaves, 10 bees and 10 butterflies, which have been crocheted and knitted to form the vibrant display. Local women and villagers began the project in September last year, and it was hung on 13th May.
“We just wanted to share something joyful,” said Dawn Chivers, a member of Atworth WI. “The drape has been made by members of the Atworth WI and their family and friends. The felt flowers were made by the children from Churchfields the Village School, Atworth Guides and Brownies.”
The drape is inspired by the success of the village’s poppy cascade, which has been displayed from the clock tower for the past three years.
“The age range of those who helped make the cascade is from 4 to over 90 years old. A highlight has been sitting in the sunshine sewing at the outside youth club, seeing all the flowers that had been created, and hearing all the positive comments from the village,” said Dawn.
“Thanks to 4Youth for allowing us to use the youth club in Atworth to sew all the flowers onto the netting outside in the sunshine – although on one day it was too hot, so we had to go inside!
“Thank you also to Nicola from The Secret Crocheter for the use of her crochet patterns. Most of the crocheted flowers were her designs, including the large sunflowers, daffodils and roses. Thanks also to Paul Weymouth from Light Fantastic for giving up his time to hang our cascade, and to the teachers and Guide and Brownie leaders for their patience with the children.”
Residents have been enjoying the cascade, with some residents saying the display looks ‘stunning and joyful.’
