MELKSHAM Food For You is appealing for donations of Christmas presents for the people in the community that they support.
The local initiative that distributes food collected from local businesses at the end of the day that can’t legally be sold the next day, currently supports 21 adult males, 19 adult females and 10 girls and 13 boys in the Melksham community.
Founder of Melksham Food For You, Kirstie McKeown said, “We are hoping that people will gift practical items such as underwear, socks and toiletries for the people who access our service.
“The children in the group are 4 years up to 12 years and there is one 16 year-old girl. However, if the community is feeling especially generous, vouchers for haircuts and maybe a shave for the men would be very much appreciated.
“It’s a hard struggle for them all and a chance to look better would boost their self-esteem. These ideas are guidelines, as we would welcome anything the public would be kind enough to give.
“We are always looking for secondhand clothing and coats and toys. Gifts do not have to be new. It would be best if they were passed to me unwrapped so I can allocate them correctly and of course wrapping paper would be greatly appreciated also.”
It has been a busy year for the new community scheme that was kick-started in April. Originally distributing food from the steps of the Town Hall, Kirstie and her team of volunteers moved to the St Michael’s church room in September.
The scheme has also been on the hunt for trustees so that they can register as a charity. “I have now appointed three trustees and we are starting on the governance paperwork which is the first step towards becoming an official registered charity,” said Kirstie.
“So hopefully all being well, we should start to receive funding later next year and be able to start looking for a premises for a community hub and supermarket.
“I can’t believe I have been doing this for nearly a year already! I cannot wait to see what next year brings.”
