The Friendly Phone Calls service that was set up due to the pandemic and is delivered by Melksham Community Support, has reached out and called people over 700 times over the past few months. These calls have often resulted in new friendships being created and several recipients have commented on how important they have become to them.
Organisers of the scheme say, “We have all had times when it has been a struggle during lockdown, but for many of us we have been able to turn to those we live with for support, or maybe spend time in the garden to have a small change in environment.
“But for many these have not been options. For those living alone, single parents, those in troubled relationships, stuck in a flat or small house with no garden, or indeed those who are just struggling to cope with what is happening, the opportunity to have a friendly phone chat with someone has been a lifeline.”
The scheme organisers have confirmed that there are no plans to stop or reduce the provision of the Friendly Phone Calls service saying, “As many of us see the move to the next phase of lockdown, we are still seeing many people who are stuck shielding in their homes, or still just really worried about all that is happening. Our wonderful volunteer team will continue to help and support these individuals.”
