Spencer Melksham Bowls Club held its second Gala Day on Saturday 18th July with a full complement of 24 teams representing 14 clubs competing in teams of three bowlers.
Competition at the group stage was fierce, with two groups needing the final games to be completed before deciding which teams would progress to the Cup and Plate Competitions.
At the end of a full day of bowls, Space Bowls from Olveston, Bristol, were the Cup winners, defeating the Moulton Boys from Spencer Moulton Bowls Club.
The Plate Final was an all-Avon Bowls Club Melksham affair, with the Avon Roadrunners coming out as winners ahead of 3s a Crowder.
With such good weather there was plenty of good bowls to watch and club members ensured there was plenty to eat and drink all day as well as organising a successful raffle. Planning for next year’s event is already underway.
With about a month of the league season to complete, competition is getting interesting as teams look to retain their position in leagues or even push for promotion.
Several players are still involved in county/national competitions , with the possibility of seeing them play in the Finals at Leamington Spa in late August. Club competitions are also in full swing. These will culminate in the Annual Finals Day from 18th to 20th September. Anyone who would like to come and watch would be more than welcome.
