THE iconic West Country band ‘The Wurzels’ are headlining the New Inn’s mini beer and cider festival this Sunday, 18th August, from 12pm. 

The New Inn in Semington Road, Melksham, will host the band, best known for their number one hit ‘The Combine Harvester’ and other hits including ‘I Am A Cider Drinker’ and Drink Up Thy Zider’

Supporting acts for the festival include Wade Merritt, Sid Bloomfield, Retrospecs, Six Lives Left, John Holcombe, Sarah D, Nightlights and more. 

Tickets are from £25 to £40 available from The New Inn, Semington Road SN12 6DT, tel. 01225 793916 or Melksham News office in the Market Place.  Entry is by advance ticket only.

  • Melksham Times Past A column about days gone by in Melksham by local historian Lisa Ellis The Bear Riots of 1868 Looking at the peaceful town now, you wouldn’t know that Melksham was actually rather riotous years ago. Several incidents made national news: the weavers’ riots in the 1720s and the time that a group turned over the famous Gurney steam engine in 1829. However, journalists seemed to exaggerate the lemonade glasses shown as missiles and furniture hurled into the air during a dance at the Assembly Hall in 1947 by calling it ‘a riot.’ After all, the band still played on.   • Melksham couple host Valentine’s Party ahead of charity trek A Melksham couple who are preparing to hike the Machu Picchu Trek next year for Dorothy House are holding a fundraising Valentine’s Party next month to boost their fundraising efforts. The challenge will see Liza Pinching and her husband, David, trek 26 miles along the famous Inca Trail. As part of the challenge, they must raise £12,000 for Dorothy House Hospice Care, which provides free palliative and end-of-life care across parts of Wiltshire and Somerset. The couple have never embarked on a challenge like this before. They have so far raised around £4,500 through a quiz night last October and a band night held in November. To further boost funds, they will host a Valentine’s Party at Spencer’s Sports and Social Club on Saturday 15th February. Liza says there will be live 80s and 90s music from Groove Dream, DJ Gary Lucas, food supplied by Miss Aubree’s Caribbean food van and a raffle.   • Melksham man publishes debut dark crime thriller A Melksham storyteller has self-published his first novel – a dark crime thriller inspired by an encounter with Liverpudlian gangsters in 1995. Adam Loretz wrote a first draft of the novel in 1998. However, the story lay in a draw in Adam’s house until the Covid pandemic, at which point he seized the opportunity to dig it out and self-publish his first-ever novel, The Compromise, which is now available on Amazon and will soon be released as an audiobook on Audible. “The story is about an innocent student who gets embroiled with an exiled gangster as they investigate a trail of blood that leads them in to a dark, criminal underworld,” explained Adam who works in video production. “The idea emerged from a pretty alarming situation I had with a bunch of Liverpudlian drug dealers back in 1995 when I was a student in London on a weekend break with my Glaswegian pen friend.   • Dog owners urged to clear up after pets following reports of increased dog mess Dog owners in Melksham are being encouraged to dispose of dog mess responsibly, using any council-owned bin, following residents’ reports of an increase in dog fouling across the town. Concerns have been raised about dog mess on walking routes near local schools, with residents highlighting the inconvenience and potential health risks. One resident said, “I walk my children to school, and there is dog mess on the pathways. It’s becoming harder to avoid, and I’m constantly watching where my children are stepping. It’s unpleasant and poses health risks if people come into contact with it.” Under UK law, dog owners can face fines of up to £1,000 for failing to clear up after their pets.   • Resident calls for safety improvements at Melksham East road crossing A local resident is campaigning for guardrails to be installed at a crossing on the newly opened Melksham East Relief Road to improve safety for children and pedestrians. Gary Fossey, supported by other local residents, is urging Wiltshire Council to install guardrails at the crossing before a new footpath is completed to link Melksham Oak Community School with the Hunters Wood development. He says that without this safety measure, children and pedestrians could be at risk of incidents with oncoming traffic, especially as there is a play park nearby. “I looked at the crossing and thought that, with the pathway being built, it really does need protection,” said Gary. “More children, as well as cyclists and children riding bikes, will probably use it. The problem is that Wiltshire Highways engineers, who have been very cooperative, assessed it before the path was finished."
