MELKSHAM Shed Club has restored a bench for a local woman who donated her late husbands tools to the club.
Melksham Shed Club gave a garden bench that they had rebuilt, to Betty Trueman from Melksham, to thank her for donating tools and a lathe.
Betty said, “My husband Tony was a woodturner and had many tools. When he passed away five years ago I didn’t know what to do with them all. I read in the Melksham News about the club and knew that would be best place to donate them.
“I am so pleased with the bench, it’s lovely. Tony would be so happy for his tools being put to good use.”
Chris Pickett who runs the club said, “When Betty told us she was going to donate Tony’s tools we were absolutely delighted. It’s a great asset for us because thanks to him, we have been able to change the emphasis of the group as we can now turn our hand to woodturning.
“We were more than happy to restore a bench for Betty in thanks for her generosity. It’s all about giving back to people and that’s why we are here, to give support to our community.
“The Shed here in Melksham is almost a year old and so far we have welcomed some 15 members who have come along to the meetings on a Wednesday morning as and when they have been free.
“We have a regular core group of five to seven who meet and enjoy good banter, a cup of coffee and, occasionally get down to a job or two!
“The purpose of The Shed is not only to give people an opportunity to do some handy-work, but to socialise and when possible support the community of Melksham. The idea came from the needs of those people who may be looking after a loved one and need some ‘me time’, or who are recently bereaved, as well as to help keep the mind active.”
The group meet on a Wednesday at Forest Community Centre, 9.30am – 12.30pm. For more information call Chris Pickett on 01225 920400 or e-mail ebidondi@uwclub.net
