WITH a top focus on the effects of sugar, Forest and Sandridge Primary School was the only school in Melksham to be awarded the Healthy Schools’ Gold Award and only the third in the county.
The schools says, “For our healthy schools award this year, we had a focus of sugar, linked to teeth and body.
“The whole school carried out experiments linked to sugary drinks and non sugary drinks – the children soaked eggshells in different liquids
“We also had a visit from the dental nurse to teach us about effects of brushing teeth and not brushing teeth. We then looked at the amount of sugar in foods in lunchboxes, and this made us think about healthier choices.”
Jen Hale added, “The case study had a big impact in school; the children were much more confident in dental hygiene and how to look after their teeth. The visit from the dental nurse was really interesting and the eggshell experiment was great, as all the children in the school were able to participate.
“We are very proud of the award.”
