The Britain in Bloom judges will be visiting Melksham next month to assess the town’s horticultural displays.
The judges will be in Melksham on 10th July, grading the town on its visually appealing plant displays, healthy vegetation, community participation, and evidence of sustainable gardening practices such as water conservation and wildlife-friendly areas.
Last year, Melksham won Gold in the competition, marking the fifth time the town has taken first place in the South West category. Organiser of Melksham’s Bloom team, Terri Welch, said a community effort is needed to help the town maintain its ‘golden’ status.
She said, “This is our chance to show off our town and to have it looking the best we can make it. As 30% of the marks are for ‘community’, it means all of us doing our bit.”
Residents can get involved with the monthly Town Tidy Day, which will be held on Sunday 6th July. “Help us pick up litter, pull out weeds, and make Melksham sparkle.
“Meet outside the town hall at 1pm for a couple of hours. Wear old clothes and definitely gloves. Bring a trowel if you want to tackle the weeds. Litter pickers and bags will be provided.
“We are lucky not to suffer much from graffiti in the town centre, but if you see any, please clean it up or report it to the town council.”
Terri is also calling on local businesses to do their part. She said, “If you are a business owner, stand outside your premises and look with fresh eyes. Does it look good? Are you happy with your display? On the 10th, if you see our judge, Terry Porter, pop out and say hi.”
Britain in Bloom is run by the Royal Horticultural Society. Last year, the competition celebrated its 60th anniversary.
“Britain in Bloom is for the whole town, not just the council or the Bloom team,” said Terri.
