THREE skittles teams of 40 players from Melksham headed to Torquay on Friday 20th April to join 29 other teams, all in the hope to be crowned “serious about events” skittles champions.
Faye George reports, “The draw had been made for fixtures and we were all drawn in different groups of 4 and on alleys right next to each other, which was nice for game one. The first game was Friday night and we got off to a great start with all three teams winning. The next game was Saturday lunch-time and once again, all three teams did the business to win again.
“We all played again Saturday night; the a and c team both won their games but unfortunately the b team were beaten by only a couple of pins. We had to eagerly wait for the other group game results to see if the b team would qualify for the final on pin count, which we are glad to say they did and very comfortably, beating their closest rivals by nearly 50 pins.
“We all let our hair down Saturday evening and joined the big party in our fancy dress costumes of Where’s Wally and TV characters and had a brilliant night. It’s now Sunday morning and time for the finals, the draw was done and once again we were drawn on alleys next to each other and all hoping to play our best to be crowned champions.
“After a very close and hard-fought final, Melksham Allsorts c were crowned champions, scoring a massive 421 pins, allsorts a finished 4th on 414 – only 7 pins behind the winners and allsorts b finished 8th.
“It was an absolutely fantastic weekend away for everyone involved and the team captains and organiser Richard George (Allsorts A). Faye George (Allsorts B) and Paul “Buzz” Barnett (Allsorts C) and not forgetting our team mascot ‘Monkey’. We all had a fantastic presentation picking up our silverware. The event organisers believed that this was the first time since events started 24 years ago that all three teams from one town had made the finals and won the weekend – which is a huge compliment to everyone that took part.”
