A NEW mobile refilling station for household products at the Tuesday Melksham Market is offering the community a helping hand to reduce their plastic waste at home and go plastic-free.
At the ‘Route Zero’ stall, owned by Carly Brown, visitors to the market can re-use and refill containers with a variety of products including laundry liquid, fabric softener, washing-up liquid, multi-use cleaning fluid, shampoo, conditioner and handwash.
The stall also sells products made from bamboo, such as toothbrushes, cotton buds, and toilet tissue; and beeswax food wrap, an alternative to cling film which Carly makes herself.
‘Route Zero’ has been in business for nearly two months and also appears regularly at the Warminster market every Friday.
Carly told Melksham News, “I started this business as I was having to travel to refill and it didn’t make sense – using petrol to try and reduce waste and help the environment – it was counterproductive. So to help other people avoid this, I started this mobile refilling station, a travelling service to take to people, so they don’t have to travel.
“People can refill their existing containers or bottles at my stall, rather than buy new products from the shops – which is increasing the amount of plastic they are using.
“Reducing plastic waste is important – we have all seen the news reports and the TV programmes that have highlighted how much plastic waste is ending up in our oceans and in landfill. The more we can re-use, the better it is for the environment.”
Carly and the ‘Route Zero’ stall will be at the Melksham Market every Tuesday.
As well as refilling containers with household products at “Route Zero’, there are a number of other ways the Tuesday market can help to reduce the use of plastic.
You can buy loose fruit and vegetables from the V&P Collins fruit and veg stall, seafood from Ken’s Fresh Fish and bread from Taylors Traditional Bakers – all without the unnecessary plastic packaging you often find in the larger supermarkets.
