MELKSHAM & District Historical Association began its 2022 schedule of talks last month.
“Once again the attendance was good at our January meeting,” reports the historical association. “We average about 60 members and visitors at each of our meetings and yet are having great difficulty in finding anyone to help out with the running of them. One lone hand went up when the chairman pleaded for assistance, very welcome indeed, so it is a case of watch this space rather than the expected announcement that this would be our last year.
“Details of the July outing to Bristol Docks were given with the choice of a boat trip down stream, the Brunel Centre with SS Great Britain, or taking advantage of a free coach trip and making your own plans.
“Finally, the chairman was able to move on to the programme for the evening. Our president, Tony Fivash, was indisposed so his presentation ‘Events & Commemorations of Yesteryear’ was given by Peter Maslen.
“Subjects covered ox roast, Penny Farthing race, fetes, carnivals, raft races, in fact every imaginable event from Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee to Victory street parties, and William and Kate’s wedding. The evening was much enjoyed by everyone and praise was given to Peter for coping so admirably.
“Our next meeting is on Thursday 17th February in Melksham Assembly Hall at 7.30pm. John Girvan, Devizes blacksmith, historian, tour guide and well-known raconteur, will present ‘Doing Time in Wiltshire’. This is bound to be an enjoyable and informative evening.”
