A history group in Melksham has published a booklet on the street names of Bowerhill to mark the 85th anniversary of the opening of RAF Melksham.
Melksham Remembers has produced the booklet, titled ‘What’s in a Name? The RAF links behind your street’, with the help of Melksham Without Parish Council and Melksham Lions Club.
Melksham Remembers is a community project which aims to create a record of life in Melksham and the surrounding villages at the time of the world wars and beyond.
Chair of Melksham Remembers, Paul Carter, said, “This has been researched over the last year.
“Which street is named after a person or maybe a plane or another RAF base? Here you will be able to find out and it may even encourage you to explore your estate.”
The booklet includes an alphabetical list of street names with details about their RAF links and images of key RAF people, maps or squadron badges.
Street names such as Hurricane Road are explored in the booklet, which tells the story of the street’s namesake, the Hawker Hurricane, a single-seater fighter aircraft used by the RAF in World War II.
The booklet is now available to be delivered for free to residents of Bowerhill, with further copies available from Melksham Tourist Information Centre at a cost of £2.
