MELKSHAM Tennis Club has waved farewell to the grass courts of Melksham House, temporarily moving base to the courts at Rivermead School, whilst they wait for the new campus to be built.
To mark the occasion, the club held a farewell party that saw them play the last few matches on the historical courts.
Ladies captain Sue Webb said, “Losing the grass courts is a sad day for us and the town, as we think they have been there since WW1!
“The club has a strong history and has done really well in the Chippenham and District league. This year both the ladies’ and men’s teams won their divisions.
“We feel positive about the future.”
Secretary for the club, Eddy Watts said, “It is a sad day for us after many years of playing at Melksham House. We are a small club and just do not have the funds to maintain the grass any longer.
“We are still hoping to enter teams in the Chippenham and District tennis league next season as we did really well this year.
“We have hired the two courts at Rivermead School to prepare and become our base for matches.”
Through the winter the club will be holding sessions on Sunday mornings from 9.30am at the Rivermead School courts in the King George V playing fields. New members who have some experience of the game are welcome to attend. For more information visit the website: www.melkshamtennis.co. uk or email: melksham tennisclub@talktalk.net
