WILTSHIRE Air Ambulance will be hosting a special Carols in the Abbey event leading up to Christmas.

“The stunning Bath Abbey is the venue for the festivities, which will include carols sung by the Horizons Choir of Bath and the brilliant Chloe Jordan,” said Wiltshire Air Ambulance’s events coordinator Beth Knights.

The event takes place on Tuesday 5th December, with doors opening at 6pm for a 7pm start, led by chaplain John Rees. There will also be readings on the night from special guests.

It follows on from the successful Carols by Candlelight event held at Marlborough College before Christmas in 2022.

“We’re incredibly excited to be inviting our supporters to come together and celebrate this Christmas,” added Beth.

“Last year’s event in Marlborough sold out in a matter of weeks and we’re expecting our Carols in the Abbey to be just as popular, so make sure you grab your tickets today.

“Wiltshire Air Ambulance will be attending the Bath Christmas Markets on the same day so why not make a day of it and visit our festive stall!”

The event is being sponsored by Goodman Nash Ltd, a firm of property auditors and business rates experts with offices in Devizes and Bristol. Find out more about Goodman Nash by visiting www.goodmannash.co.uk.

Business development manager at Goodman Nash, Jason Delaney, said, “We’re delighted to sponsor Carols in the Abbey as part of our ongoing support of Wiltshire Air Ambulance. The event promises a magical, festive experience which will help to raise vital funds for such an important charity in our region.”

Tickets prices start £12 and can be purchased online now. Visit www.wiltshireairambulance.co.uk/carols.

  • Tough lessons for Town after back-to-back defeats

Southern League. Saturday 30th August. Malvern Town 2-0 Melksham Town

FA Trophy. Saturday 6th September. Portishead Town 4-0 Melksham Town

Melksham Town have found the going tough of late with defeats to Malvern Town in the league and to Portishead in the FA Trophy.

The side travelled to Malvern a week ago with new signing Stan Wyatt in the matchday squad. Town started well but unfortunately a keeper error saw the home side take the lead.

Melksham were reduced to 10 men on 38 minutes as debutant Stan Wyatt was shown a straight red card for a high foot. Town fashioned a couple of decent chances in the half but the ten men then conceded a second goal prior to half-time.

  • Competition still strong at Spencer Melksham Bowls Club

There is plenty of competition going on at Spencer Melksham Bowls Club even though the 2025 season is rapidly drawing to a close.

Friday evenings in July through to September have found us competing in the Roy Hawker Trophy, played in honour of a well-respected former member.

Six squads of players have been playing a new format of triples, based on sets, rather like tennis.

Each set consists of six ends and we play two sets followed by a ‘golden end’, making two and a half points on offer from the match.

  • Plans submitted for 205 houses near Melksham Oak

A planning application has been submitted to build 205 houses on land north of the A365 Bath Road, near Melksham Oak Community School.

The application, lodged by Hannick Homes & Developments, proposes a mixed-use development of homes ranging from affordable to market properties, alongside an area for the future expansion of the adjacent school.

Plans also include public open space, landscaping and associated engineering works. The site is already allocated for housing within the Wiltshire Council Local Plan.

In its design and access statement, the developer said, “The homes within the proposals will be a variety of different types, which will allow for a diverse population and work towards meeting the housing needs in Melksham.”

  • History made as Melksham Cricket Club crowned Division 2 champions

Sat. 30th August: Melksham CC vs Bishops Cannings CC

Match Abandoned

Melksham CC’s 1st XI have finished the season as WCCL Division 2 champions, securing a first ever league title for the club and ensuring that the team will be playing their cricket in Division 1 next season.

League glory was confirmed after the 1s final day clash away to title rivals Bishops Cannings was abandoned due to rain.

Melksham had come into the match with a slight advantage in terms of points; however, it was the hosts who came firing out the blocks early doors, with Cannings’ opening pair of James Page and Dave Bromley both hammering quick fire hundreds to fire their team to a total of 200-0 within 24 overs.

  • First Intercity Express Train calls at Melksham Station

The first calls of an Intercity Express Train (IET) at Melksham Station took place on Tuesday 2nd September, with three trains running direct to London in the late afternoon.

Melksham Station has been equipped to enable long-distance trains to call at the town, and software on the trains has been updated to include Melksham in their passenger stop database.

Chair of the Melksham Transport User Group, Graham Ellis, said, “Local passenger trains normally call at Melksham from around 06:30am to 23:00, but when the main line between London and the West Country is closed, expresses are diverted our way instead and they replace the local train. The calls at Melksham enable a service to be maintained where engineering work is planned in the future; we should now see through trains to London and to the West Country.”

The Melksham Transport Group looks after passenger interest in all public and sustainable transport. The committee will meet on Thursday 18th September and we have a public meeting on Wednesday 8th October. Venues and agendas will be published closer to the meetings.

If you would like to join the committee, contact Graham Ellis.
