A NEW campaign to raise awareness about keeping dogs on leads in King George V playing field is to be launched by the town council.
Currently dogs are required to be kept on a lead in the park, unless in the designated dog enclosure.
However, residents have contacted the council, concerned about dog owners allowing their dogs off the lead outside of the designated enclosure, endangering children and other dogs.
One resident told the town council, “I recently heard of two large dogs that were off lead and attacked a spaniel in this park. I know of a few friends that have nervous dogs because they have been attacked before or are a rescue dog that have been ill-treated that won’t dog walk in the park any longer for the very reason of dogs running loose.”
At this month’s community development committee meeting, councillors voted in favour of launching a campaign to raise awareness about keeping dogs on leads.
The council will also launch a competition for children in the community, under 11, to design a poster for the campaign, to be displayed in the park.
