THE Little Fir Tree Nursery in Melksham is creating an orchard.
The orchard has already been started with the planting of 12 trees with a variety of apples and pears. The children will also be able to take the fruit home to their families.
Sarah Clover director for children’s services said, “Our thanks to Lowden who have offered the trees at a discounted price. This will be part of the curriculum for early learning. The children have helped to design the orchard and will be having a fairy corner and wooden statues.
“The nursery is run by a charity, the YMCA, and the children come from the local community of Melksham. The nursery has a large underdeveloped outside area and this will be great for the future. There are also plans to develop a copse in another part of the garden in the spring. This will eventually give shade in the summer. The Woodland Trust have donated these trees.
“We do still require certain items and ask if there is anyone who could donate wooden statues and logs for the children to use as seats.”
The orchard has been created thanks to sponsors from local businesses including Mastershoe of Trowbridge; Sahara (Melksham) based at Sandridge; Autoline Service Station Spa Road; Kingstons Estate Agents (Melksham); The Mortgage Advice Bureau – trading as Silver Street Solutions, Bradford on Avon; West Country Teaching Agency, Canon Square; Tops the hairdressers, High Street; The Tandoori Restaurant, Church Street, Melksham; Shaw Pilates, Bath Road; Trefoil properties, Canon Square; Gill Hanlan former head of early years Wiltshire Council and Textworks/Future Supply also in Shaw.
