The series of concerts in Christ Church, Shaw is back for a new season with a brand-new programme of events.
It kicks off on Friday 20th March with an exciting young tenor – Gregory Steward, who is rapidly making a name for himself in the South West. He will be presenting an evening of classical favourites and ‘Songs from the Shows’.
Gregory, 26, graduated from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama with a First Class Honours Degree in 2022. Prior to commencing his degree he was a joint specialist vocal and trumpet scholar at Wells Cathedral School. He was winner of the Taunton Young Singer Competition and a semi-finalist in the prestigious Somerset Song Prize, a National Competition for singers up to the age of 25.
He has performed with the nationally acclaimed Tenebrae, as well as with The Wellensian Consort, and the Choir of St John’s Oxford. After successfully auditioning for the BBC National Chorus of Wales he performed Britten’s War Requiem and Handel’s Messiah, both at St David’s Hall.
Since graduating, Gregory has travelled widely over the South West giving solo recitals in many churches. He has also performed the tenor solo with Exeter Festival Chorus in Schutz’s Christmas Story and in Stainer’s Crucifixion at Taunton Minster. In 2024 he collaborated with the West Somerset Singers to perform the tenor solo in J H Maunder’s ‘Olivet to Calvary’ and ‘This is the Record of John’ by Orlando Gibbons. He has also had the opportunity of performing a duet with Jessica Robinson, one of the finalists in Cardiff Singer of The World, at Tewkesbury Abbey. Most recently he was invited to be the tenor soloist at the Devon County Festival of Remembrance at The Barnfield Theatre in Exeter.
Tickets for the concert are just £10 per head and can be purchased in advance at Spindles Coffee Stop in Whitley. You can also reserve tickets by emailing aswparish@gmail.com. Refreshments are available during the interval without charge with any donations going to Dorothy House.
“There’s no need to trek into Bath or Bristol to hear first class musical entertainment live – it’s here on your doorstep!” said Dianne Briggs from the church.
“And don’t forget to look out for future events at Shaw Church.”
