FOR the fourth consecutive year, Blenheim House care home in Melksham has been ranked in the top 20 care homes in the South-West region by the prestigious CareHome.co.uk Top 20 Care Home Awards.

Part, of the Berkley Care Group, Blenheim House, has been consistently recognised for their exceptional standards of residential, dementia, nursing and respite care by residents and their families.

Carehome.co.uk is a platform where residents and their loved ones can give ratings and reviews to care homes for the wider public to view. Those who enter a review can provide details on their experiences with the home.

A spokesperson for Blenheim House said, “The home is among the most highly recommended on the CareHome.co.uk site. According to the site, it has a review score of ten out of ten based on 31 reviews made within the past two years. Overall, Blenheim House has 135 reviews with an average ‘Overall Experience’ rating of 4.9 out of five.

“The home also received a Good rating from the CQC in August 2022, exemplifying the quality care provided by the home’s team.

“Blenheim residents can enjoy the home’s bar bistro, fine-dining experiences, botanical lounge and beautiful landscaped gardens, which all come as part of Blenheim’s all-inclusive care offering.”

The general manager of Blenheim House, Clare Hodges, said, “We are absolutely delighted to have Blenheim House recognised as one of the top 20 care homes in the South-West for the fourth year in a row. This accolade is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our team, who strive every day to provide exceptional care and create a welcoming, inclusive environment for all our residents.

“We believe in offering not just care, but a lifestyle that enhances the wellbeing of everyone who calls Blenheim House their home. We are deeply grateful to our residents and their families for their trust in us and to CareHome.co.uk for acknowledging our commitment to excellence.

“We will continue to uphold these high standards and look forward to making Blenheim House even better in the years to come.”

  • Museum showcases historic Christmas items

This month’s display in the town hall museum features a collection of Christmas-themed items from Melksham dating back to the early 1900s.

From a Christmas advert from 1923 to an image of the town’s Christmas tree from 1922, the display also includes a Christmas postcard sent to Melksham in 1905, an advert for what was showing at the Melksham Picture House in 1915 and an early 20th-century Kings Arms Christmas card, plus more.

Organised by Melksham and District Historical Society, the chair, Paul Carter, said, “There is a display near our cabinets, so please make your presence known so staff can remove the rope barrier for closer inspection.”

  • Crafts and storytelling at pop-up Advent shop

A pop-up Advent shop on the high pavement will be open this Saturday for one more session of crafts, storytelling and Christmas fun.

The space on the high pavement will be open this Saturday 20th December, from 10am to 12pm, marking the last session before Christmas. The shop was opened by a group of Christians to share the story behind Christmas.

One of the organisers John Firth said, “As Melksham’s Christmas lights glow across the Market Place and throughout the town and we enjoy the wonderful window displays in the shops, we might be excited or maybe filled with anxiety about the coming season. It’s easy to get swept up in the bustle of preparations or be aware of loneliness, financial difficulties, or bereavement in the lives of those around us.

  • Confidence growing as Town extend unbeaten run to five

Saturday 6th December
Melksham Town 0-0 Mousehole FC
Mellksham welcomed Mousehole to the Meads of Melksham Community Football Stadium, for what turned out to be a competitive and evenly contested affair.

Chances were at a premium in a match dominated by defensive organisation and disciplined shape. Melksham looked the more threatening in spells, pressing well and moving the ball with purpose, but clear-cut opportunities proved elusive as Mousehole stood firm.

At the other end, the hosts remained resolute, ensuring a clean sheet and a deserved point.

Man of the Match – Adam Forster

Saturday 13th December
SC Inkberrow 1-1 Melksham Town
Town were back in action on the road against Sporting Club Inkberrow and again showed their new footballing style on a very heavy pitch.

Melksham took the lead, applying pressure early on and capitalising on a moment of hesitation from the Inkberrow backline. Jamal Lawrence pounced on a loose pass, muscled past the defence and slotted the ball home for his 10th goal of the season.

  • Christmas comes to Melksham!

Christmas has arrived in Melksham with festive lights, fundraising displays and community events across the town.

Thousands of residents filled the town centre for the annual Christmas fair and lights switch-on on Saturday 6th December. The lights, widely praised as the best in the county, were switched on by local girl Ciara Cottle, with the countdown led by the town’s digital talking Christmas tree.

Ciara, who has a heart condition, dilated cardiomyopathy, was due to switch on the lights last year but the event was cancelled due to Storm Darragh.

This year’s celebrations featured live music, dance performances, festive stalls, children’s activities and the chance to meet Mr and Mrs Claus in their grotto.

  • Family call for inquiry after CCTV footage missing following fatal collision

The family of a Melksham woman who died following a town centre collision have called for an independent inquiry after CCTV footage from the time of the incident was found to be missing.

Cheryl Decarteret, 79, died after being struck by a white Ford Transit van which was reversing outside Savers on Lowbourne on 27th September. Her friend, Margaret Shaw, sustained life-threatening injuries.

One of Melksham Town Council’s taxpayer-funded CCTV cameras overlooks the Savers store, however around 30 minutes of footage from the time of the incident is unavailable.

The family have been campaigning for answers following the collision and say the absence of CCTV footage has caused additional distress.

Cheryl’s son Scott Thomson said, “The family is calling on the Liberal Democrats for an independent investigation into Melksham Town Council Data Control Office and CCTV system, with the outcome of the investigation to be published for the public to see.

“This would help provide answers as to why the footage of our mum’s death is missing. Not having access to this footage has caused our family additional distress at a difficult time when we are already struggling to come to terms with our loss.

“We hope that an investigation will bring some clarity, help us understand what happened, ensure transparency and maintain public confidence in the town’s CCTV.”

Concerns about the reliability of the town’s CCTV system had been raised prior to the incident.

  • Melksham Environment Group: The Community Larder

As a member of the Melksham Environmental Group (MEG), I would like to draw your attention to the Community Larder, which is open weekdays at the Round House in Church Street.

It was set up by Adrienne Westbrook and myself three years ago and its aims are purely environmental and completely in line with those of MEG. Anyone can come along and take their pick of the foods available at the Larder. Food is collected from local supermarkets every day by a team of dedicated volunteers; food which would otherwise have been dumped in landfill simply because a ‘best before’ date has, or is about to, expire. We rescue what would otherwise have been wasted.
