Girls’ football team ‘go the extra mile’ for local charity

GIRLS in the Melksham Town under 10 youth football team are about to embark on a fundraising walk for Dorothy House Hospice Care.

They will be walking just over 3.5 miles starting from Melksham football club in a loop around the town, raising funds for the local charity that offers free palliative and end of life care.

“It is a charity that relies heavily on donations and fundraising events to continue their invaluable work,” says coach, Lexi Czerwionka. “The decision of the Melksham Town Youth FC U10 Girls team to support this cause is commendable, especially considering their young age. It shows that they are not only dedicated to their sport, but also have a sense of social responsibility.”

There will be 15 players, along with their coaches and parents taking part in the walk on Saturday 24th February.

“This challenging hike is a testament to the determination and resilience of these young girls, who are willing to go the extra mile – quite literally – to support a good cause,” says Lexi. “It also serves as a team bonding activity as they will be working together towards a common goal.

“This walk is not just about raising funds for a charity. It also highlights the values that football in-stills in its players – teamwork, perseverance, and a sense of community. These girls are not just teammates, but they are also friends who are supporting each other through this journey. They are also setting a positive example for other young footballers, showing that football is not just about winning games, but also about using their platform to make a positive impact in society.

“As the saying goes, ‘football is a universal language.’ It has the power to transcend boundaries and bring people together from different backgrounds. In this case, it has brought together a group of young girls who share a passion for the sport and a desire to make a difference. The walk to support Dorothy House Hospice Care is a representation of the wider football community coming together to support a noble cause.

“Moreover, this initiative show-cases the importance of instilling a sense of social responsibility in young people. It teaches them that they have the power to make a positive impact in their community, no matter how small. It also shows that football is about more than just physical fitness and winning trophies – it is also about character development and being a responsible member of society.”

  • Thousands line streets for colourful Melksham Carnival

Thousands of people lined Melksham’s streets for this year’s carnival procession, which saw the town come alive with colour, crowds – and lots of fancy dress.

Residents were out in force on Saturday 5th July to support a wide variety of entrants, including dancers, a marching band, bikers, and characters ranging from superheroes to Disney princesses.

The procession was led by a group of costumed bikers who interacted with the crowd. They were followed by the carnival royalty in open-top cars, along with entries from dance groups, schools, sports clubs and businesses from the town and beyond.

“The carnival team and I would like to thank so many people who support us, from dresses and crowns to vehicles and donations, marshals and the public,” said Michelle Brightwell of the Melksham Carnival team. “We are so grateful to you, and we can’t wait to do it all again next year.

“The absolute highlights had to be the Top Hat Riders, who brought smiles to so many people by letting them sit on their bikes and stopping for photos, and also the sheer determination of Broughton Gifford Preschool to be with us, despite their fully decorated float breaking down just as they set off to the start point. But they pulled it together and arrived in plenty of time."

  • Melksham residents to vote on town’s future in Neighbourhood Plan referendum

Melksham residents will soon be able to vote on the future of their town and surrounding villages, as the updated Joint Melksham Neighbourhood Plan (JMNP2) goes to a public referendum on Thursday 31st July.

The Neighbourhood Plan is a key planning document that gives local communities a direct say in shaping how their area develops. It covers everything from housing, green space and infrastructure, to supporting businesses and protecting historic buildings – and if approved in the referendum, it will carry legal weight when deciding future planning applications in the area.

The plan, developed by Melksham Town Council and Melksham Without Parish Council, has now passed its independent examination, a major milestone that clears the way for it to be formally adopted – but only if approved by the community.

“This is your plan, built on your feedback,” said representatives from the town and parish councils. “It’s an important chance to have your say in shaping Melksham’s future.”

  • Melksham players help Dorset and Wilts lift national trophy at Twickenham

Two Melksham Rugby Club players helped Dorset and Wiltshire clinch the Gill Burns Division 3 Trophy in dramatic fashion at Twickenham’s Allianz Stadium recently.

Charlotte Wellon and Nicole Crowley played in the Division 3 County Championship Final against Sussex in a thrilling encounter that ended in a dramatic penalty shootout.

In a hard-fought and evenly-matched game, Dorset and Wiltshire were leading with a minute to go but Sussex converted a penalty in front of the post to draw the game 15-15.

The game went to a nerve-racking kicking competition, with each team taking six kicks from different positions. Dorset & Wilts held their nerve to win 2–0, securing the Gill Burns Division 3 Trophy.

“A massive well done to the girls who represented Melksham Rugby Club; they made the badge and town proud,” said Scott Simmons from Melksham Rugby Club.

“Credit also has to go to Sophie Gilson and Tia Hunter-Hashka who played their part to get Dorset and Wilts to the final.”

  • Triple podium for Higgins

The weekend of the 28th-29th June saw the fourth round of the National Post Classic Grand Prix 250cc/350cc Championships held at Anglesey with Broughton Gifford’s Darrell Higgins competing on his Dennis Trollope-backed Yamaha TZ 350cc machine.
After qualifying, Darrell was fifth fastest but his first race on the Saturday saw two red flags with the second part after only five laps and Darrell crossed the line in third place. Darrell’s two races on the Sunday ran the full distance of nine laps each and he notched up another pair of third places which has saw him move up to fifth place in the 350cc Championship. Darrell said afterwards that these were his best results so far this season and was pleased that his bike kept going as racing bikes of this age can be challenging at times as they are over 40 years old.

  • Former stationery shop up for auction

The building of a former independent stationery shop, Edwards, is due to go up for auction.
Edwards Stationery, which was based at 7 Bank Street, closed last September due to a rise in costs. Now, ten months later and the building is listed for auction on 10th July at a guide price of £90,000, with the estate and lettings agent Strakers saying the space would be an ‘ideal investment.’
Former owner of Edwards, Kamlesh Patel, had been running the shop for eight years before it closed and said that although the shop survived the Covid lockdowns, rising costs following the war in Ukraine made it no longer viable. The Grade II listed building has been a stationery shop in the town since the 1980s, stocking various supplies including pens, notebooks, envelopes and art materials.
