A local businessman with a fear of flying is preparing to jump out of a plane from an altitude of 13,000ft high for charity.
Melksham resident and owner of B&S Construction, Wayne Bailey, will attempt to conquer his fear of taking off in a plane to take part in a tandem skydive in June.
Wayne told Melksham News, “It’s something that I’ve always wanted to do – I didn’t want to do something easy, it had to be out of my comfort zone. The charity will be relying on me to get the job done, but it will be difficult when I’m up there. I’m not too bad with heights – however, 13 feet is very different to 13,000 feet! I’m actually frightened of flying! Once I’m up there I’m fine, but take-off is like a white-knuckle ride for me!”
Wayne is raising money for Cancer Research UK and has a fundraising target of £750. “Cancer is something that has affected me in my life,” explained Wayne, “my nan passed away from cancer when I was almost 16 years old, I had lived with her from when I was eight years old. Also, recently, a close friend of mine was told that he has cancer.
“It feels like now is the time to do something. I have three children – a seven-month old, eight-year old and a 11-year old – and ever since the youngest came along I have started to do more for others, like giving blood. Having children puts things into perspective and knowing someone who has cancer, who is close to my own age – it brings you down to earth. You never know what is around the corner. So if I can do anything to help like raising money for charity, I want to.
“I’ll be jumping out of the plane in a morph suit – and I’m encouraging local businesses to sponsor me and in exchange, I’ll have their logo put onto the suit.
“I’m excited. When it comes to the day the adrenaline will be going, I’ll think of the charity and that’s what will get me through it.”
