A resident at an all-inclusive care home in Melksham celebrated their 100th birthday recently, surrounded by family and friends.
Audrey Barber marked her 100th birthday with two special parties, bringing together family, friends and even a few unusual guests at Blenheim House, a member of the Berkley Care Group.
Audrey remembers the outbreak of World War II when she was just 15 years old. While offered the chance to evacuate, she chose to remain in Walthamstow, where she recalls the chilling sound of the first doodlebug bomb. Later in life, she faced a personal battle with tuberculosis, being told she would never have children, only to welcome her son, Jon, at the age of 40.
A talented dress designer, Audrey worked at Harvey Nichols in London before moving to Hammersmith with her husband, Bryan, who was granted the Freedom of the City of London, a distinct honour granted for significant contributions to London and public life.
Audrey later became a telephonist at British Telecom, rising to the position of supervisor before retiring at 60. After spending 12 years living with her son and daughter-in-law in a purpose-built annexe, Audrey moved to Blenheim House, where she continues to enjoy life surrounded by family and friends.
Her birthday celebrations were split across two memorable events. The first, held at Blenheim House, featured a “Tropical Discoveries” party, where Audrey delighted in handling tarantulas, giant millipedes and stick insects. She fondly recalled an earlier moment in her life when she nursed an injured pigeon back to health, feeding it from a shoebox at work.
The festivities continued over the weekend, with a second celebration attended by family, including her four grandsons and six great-grandchildren. Guests enjoyed a buffet-style tea, drinks, and, of course, another birthday cake in Audrey’s honour.
Expressing their gratitude, Audrey’s family shared, “We’re so thankful to have been able to celebrate such a momentous occasion with her. Seeing her surrounded by loved ones and enjoying the day was truly special.”
Blenheim House’s events manager, Chris Preston, said, “It was an absolute privilege to host Audrey’s 100th birthday. She is such a wonderful part of our community and seeing her share these moments with family and friends was heartwarming.
“From the animals to the cake, every detail made the day unforgettable. We’re glad that Audrey had such a happy 100th and look forward to celebrating many more milestones with her.”
