Local home store Leekes have come to the aid of a Melksham community group and Wilts & Berks Canal Trust by stepping in to save their forthcoming River Festival.
The two day event was at an advanced stage of planning when the previous sponsor withdrew, and at the last moment, local family-owned firm Leekes generously offered to save the day by providing sponsorship for the event. This will take place on Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th September at the King George V playing field and on the Avon itself. The festival will include boat trips up the Avon, canoe races, genuine steam boats, an Edwardian fairground, face painting, children’s activities and many more attractions for people of all ages to enjoy.
Matt Gelder, store manager at Leekes in Melksham said, “We are thrilled to be supporting this fantastic family event. The Wilts & Berks Canal Trust is working hard to restore the canal’s Melksham Link in order to bring great leisure and tourism benefits to the town; and the River Festival is a great way to spread the word about all the brilliant work they are doing to hopefully reopen this section of the canal.
“The local community is extremely important to Leekes so we are always happy to get involved in exciting initiatives like this. We are looking forward to the weekend in September and hope to see some familiar customer faces whilst we’re there.”
