A local community support organisation has marked another busy year, with volunteers covering 78,364 miles and contributing 9,380 hours of work to help residents get to medical appointments.
Melksham & District Link Scheme provides essential transport for those who might otherwise struggle to attend medical appointments, offering trips to local surgeries as well as hospitals as far away as Oxford and Southampton.
Chair Liz Rowley said, “This charity is making a real difference to the lives of people in Melksham. Nearly 3,000 trips were completed last year, with the Royal United Hospital being by far the most popular destination.
“‘I don’t know what I would do without you?’ is something our volunteer drivers hear so often.”
Last year, the charity celebrated its 30th anniversary and is now encouraging new volunteers to get involved.
“Although volunteer numbers are quite good, Link is always looking for more people to help,” Liz continued.
“Volunteer driving is a very flexible role—you can choose when and where you go. Some drivers fit their volunteering around full- or part-time jobs, and it can also be a great way to gain experience before returning to work after a career break.
“We are also looking for a new coordinator to work on a monthly rota, matching clients with drivers.”
