A local web and graphic designer has gone her own way when it comes to publishing books.
After nearly 10 rejections from traditional publishers, Amy Whitewick naturally chose the path closest to her profession – self publishing.
Amy said, “Having over eight years’ experience in web, graphic design, editing and print media, self publishing was just another extension of what I could already do. Why should I let traditional publishers choose whether or not my work can be available to my audience? I have both written and illustrated my first book, which is intended for children. The inspiration for it came after a period of insomnia I had for three weeks. As I lay awake, I thought, what if I was very young and I felt like this? Then the book came to me – ‘Morgan the Moon Bear Couldn’t Sleep’.
“Moon Bear is another name for the Asian Black Bear, which has the most enchanting shape of a crescent moon on its chest – perfect for a night time character, especially as the moon is always associated as a friend in the darkness.
“The story has a gentle rhythm to it, meaning it can be easily read to a little one – and there’s lots of opportunity for impressions!
“Morgan is visited by his forest friends including an owl, a moose, a wolf and a frog. Each of them have their own ways of getting to sleep; pretending to fly, counting sheep or thinking of the things they like to do best.
“The 28 page book was launched on 1st January and is available globally through Amazon, and very soon you will be able to order it through selected book stores.
“I’m delighted to share my work to the public in a more personal and connected way – self publishing and the internet gives me the opportunity to do this. I’ve always wanted to publish a book, and this one certainly isn’t my last!”
