Lunch dates with Community Meals

MELKSHAM Community Meals invites you to the Assembly Hall for its regular lunch service. 

Upcoming dates are: Friday 11th October, Sunday 13th October, Friday 18th October, Sunday 20th October, Wednesday 23rd October, Sunday 27th October, Wednesday 30th October, Sunday 3rd November.

Organisers say, “On your own? Don’t eat alone, come and meet our friendly team.”

Meals are served from 12pm until 2pm. Everyone is welcome and meals start from £5. Bookings advisable, but not essential. 

For meal bookings, call the Assembly Hall  on 709887 or Sue Mortimer on 07719 935 883.

  • Volunteers recognised for Girlguiding dedication in London. Two Melksham Girlguiding volunteers attended a VIP event in London’s Leicester Square last month to celebrate their long-standing commitment to Girlguiding. Christine Glover and Pam Rainsley were invited to the annual awards presentation in London to recognise the voluntary work they have undertaken for the Girlguiding movement over the last 40 years. Christine has been with Wiltshire South Guides since 1983 and has also been in British Girlguiding Overseas in Germany and Saudi Arabia.   • Melksham couple fundraising for Peru trek in aid of Dorothy House. A Melksham couple are working hard to raise funds to take part in a trek to Peru in support of the local hospice, Dorothy House. Liza Pinching and her husband, David, aim to raise £12,000 to fund the trek in April 2026. The funds raised will go to Dorothy House, where Liza works, to provide vital support for the hospice’s palliative and end-of-life care, as well as bereavement counselling for families. “I’m raising the money to put back into the hospice care,” Liza said. “As a charity, we only get a small amount of NHS funding, so the more money I can raise, the better it will be.   • A fresh start for Melksham Oak with new senior leadership team. The new senior leadership team at Melksham Oak Community School say they are looking forward to helping the school flourish and encouraging students to have high aspirations. The town’s only secondary school was in the public eye last year following parents’ complaints and teacher strikes; however, the new team is now looking forward to a fresh start. New executive headteacher David Cooper has taken over the leadership of the school from former headteacher Haris Hussain.   • Police call for witness after elderly man mugged outside Sainsbury’s. Wiltshire Police are calling for witnesses or anyone who has information to come forward after an elderly man was mugged outside of Sainsbury’s at the end of last month. The man, who is in his 80s, said he was approached by a woman at around 2.30pm on Saturday 28th September, claiming to be collecting money for charity. A statement from Wiltshire Police said, “He gave her some cash and she grabbed him into a hug. “After entering the store and when trying to pay for his shopping he realised that around £60 was missing. “The woman is described as a white woman, around 5ft 6ins tall of a slim build.   • Local mum’s CPR campaign gains national attention. A Melksham mum has taken her campaign for CPR awareness to the national stage, urging all new parents to learn this critical skill after her own experience saving her baby’s life. Over the past few years, Hayley Gardyj, a mother of three from Bowerhill, has been campaigning to ensure that all new parents are given CPR training, following her traumatic experience of giving CPR to her son Brodie when he stopped breathing as a newborn. Recently, Hayley featured in an infant CPR training video produced by the British Red Cross and appeared on Channel 5 News, sharing her powerful story and the importance of CPR training. “I feel that the message is reaching more people and being spread far and wide,” Hayley said. “More people are joining the campaign and sharing the CPR video, including health visitors, midwives, and paediatricians who I work with at HCRG Care Group.   • Now or never opportunity for town to buy former Blue Pool site. Melksham Town Council has agreed to enter negotiations with Wiltshire Council to acquire the former Blue Pool site, which may also incorporate the Assembly Hall in its redevelopment. This opportunity has been labelled a ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ chance for the town. Councillors have long discussed the potential of the Blue Pool and Assembly Hall sites as a potential site for a new facility or venue.   • Mother raises awareness of organ donation after daughter’s life-saving heart transplant. A MOTHER from Melksham has shared her teenage daughter’s extraordinary journey of receiving a heart transplant to encourage more people to consider organ donation. In a show of support, last month the Town Hall was lit up in pink as part of the national campaign to raise awareness. Carlie Robson’s 15-year-old daughter, Ciara Cottle, was diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy earlier this year, a condition in which the heart becomes enlarged and struggles to pump blood effectively.   • Local pensioner to sell guitar collection to fund energy bills this winter. A local man says he feels compelled to sell his cherished guitars to cover his energy bills this winter, following the government’s decision to stop the £300 winter fuel payment for millions of pensioners. David Walker, known locally for his involvement in community groups and as the town’s former Carers’ Champion, has described the situation as ‘dismaying’ and ‘disillusioning.’ “It’s disillusioning that I’m having to sell things that mean so much to me, but I have nothing else,” said David. One of his guitars holds particular sentimental value, as it was used to play music for his late wife, Georgina, who had Alzheimer’s disease.
