A MAN has been arrested following a stabbing near the underpass on Bath Road.
The incident took place at approximately 3.00am on Sunday 25th May after the victim was approached from behind by a man who punched him in the stomach before stabbing him in the inner thigh. The man – who was unknown to the victim – then ran off towards Melksham town centre.
Following a police appeal a male was arrested in connection with the attack. He has now been released on police bail, pending further enquiries.
The victim required medical treatment at the scene but was not required to go to the hospital.
The following day a small green kitchen knife believed to have been used in the attack was found in a garden at Bell Court, near to the scene of the incident and handed in to police.
The incident has shocked many people in the town with some taking to Facebook to share their thoughts. Margaret Brooks said, “Really hope the poor man is ok, you are not safe in Melksham now, what a horrible world we live in, so sad that people feel the need to stab people.” Whilst Katy Mitchell said, “I hope he’s ok I hope the person is caught and he has the book thrown at him.”
Detective Sergeant Andy Morley said, “I’d ask anyone who was on Bath Road or the surrounding areas in the early hours of Sunday morning to come forward with any information they may have.
“Thankfully, the victim was not badly hurt but we are treating this extremely seriously.
“I’d like to reassure the local community that incidents such as this are rare and we are doing all we can to find the person responsible for this crime.”
