MELKSHAM Town Council has proposed that the Market Place toilets should be closed at night following reports of anti-social behaviour.
The toilets are currently open 24 hours a day, but if approved, the proposal will change the opening hours to 6am to 11pm every day.
The proposal has been made to protect the safety of town council staff who have been regularly called out to attend to reported disturbances in the Market Place toilets during the last month.
Mayor, cllr Adrienne Westbrook, told last month’s town council asset management meeting, “I was really concerned when I heard that our caretakers were called out three nights in a row.”
Cllr Hayley Spencer-Illman added, “I believe it is reasonable to change the opening hours. We have a duty to make sure these are available and in a good condition for everyone that does use them. If there are people that are abusing them during certain hours, then it is reasonable to close them at these times to prevent that from happening.”
Whilst the town council has voted in favour, the proposal now needs to be discussed and voted on by Melksham Without Parish Council, who jointly fund the maintenance of the toilets.
