Marsha the mascot is busy on her 1st birthday!

ONE of Wiltshire Air Ambulance’s most loved team mem-bears marked her first birthday on Sunday 2nd December by attending three fundraising events.

Marsha, the charity’s pilot bear mascot, cheered on those taking part in the Swindon Santa Fun Run at Lydiard Park, Swindon, and even took part in the Zumba warm up!

She then joined other Wiltshire Air Ambulance volunteers at a stall by Santa’s grotto at Leekes department store in Melksham before attending the Winter Wonderland event at Whitehall Garden Centre, near Chippenham, where she ended the day by cutting her birthday cake.

Marsha has been in huge demand since joining Wiltshire Air Ambulance, attending a variety of fundraising events all over Wiltshire on her own, or with her paramedic bear crewmate, Wilber.

Marsha and Wilber are sponsored by Soft Options Water Softeners Limited, a family-run business based in Burbage, near Marlborough. Soft Options supply and install water softeners and filtered drinking water systems and also offer water softener servicing and salt supplies for both domestic and commercial use.

Beth Gardner, fundraising manager at Wiltshire Air Ambulance said, “Marsha has proven to be as popular with the public as our paramedic mascot, Wilber, and has attended all sorts of events including bake sales, a netball match and a charity football match at Swindon Town FC.

“We’re so grateful to Soft Options Water Softeners Limited for sponsoring Marsha and Wilber, as it shows their commitment to our lifesaving work. We’d also like to thank our volunteers who help bring our mascots to life.”

Wiltshire Air Ambulance is always keen to hear from people who would be interested in helping the charity by becoming a volunteer. Call the charity team on 01225 300536 or email hello@wiltshireairambulance .co.uk.

  • Residents criticise town council over tree works during nesting season

Residents have hit out at Melksham Town Council after coppicing works were carried out on a mature horse chestnut tree in King George V Park during what is considered to be nesting season.

The tree, which was not under a Tree Protection Order, was recently cut back by the town council. The works took place shortly before a circus arrived to set up in the park and speculation among residents has pointed to the tree being cut back to allow a large vehicle from the circus to pass through.

The council has said the tree was “identified as needing maintenance during a comprehensive tree survey conducted in January,” but the timing and apparent link to the circus have sparked criticism from local residents.

  • Public meeting to view Shurnhold Fields car park plans

Plans for a new car park at Shurnhold Fields will be on display at a public meeting at Melksham Town Hall on Monday 12th May.

The event will give residents the chance to view the proposals, speak with Wiltshire Council representatives, and submit any questions or comments. Plans for new flood defences in the area will also be available to view.

Shurnhold Fields, located off Dunch Lane, is jointly owned by Melksham Town Council and Melksham Without Parish Council and is maintained by the Friends of Shurnhold Fields. A car park has been part of the councils’ long-term vision to improve access to the popular green space.

  • Melksham woman reunited with sign from her grandfather’s iconic town centre shop

A Melksham woman has been reunited with a sign from her grandfather’s iconic Melksham shop, based in the town centre in the 1950s and 60s.

Marianne Staniforth has been given the sign for Sawyers, which was her grandfather’s fruit, vegetable and sweet shop located in the precinct in the town centre. The shop, which is now Haine & Smith Opticians, stood next to the former picture house.

“Lots of people will remember the shop,” says Marianne. “It was quite iconic in Melksham and I am sure many residents have lovely memories.”

When a family friend bought Marianne’s late father’s house, they found the sign being used as a shelf in the pantry.

  • Local doctor completes ‘Peaks in Pants’ challenge to support women in need

A doctor from Spa Medical Centre has completed the gruelling Three Peaks Challenge, raising over £11,000 and collecting hundreds of pairs of underwear for women in need.

Dr Claire Rigby joined seven other women for the ‘Peaks in Pants’ challenge, climbing the highest mountains in Scotland, England and Wales – Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) – in under 24 hours, to support the charity Let’s Get Our Knickers in a Twist.

The charity, launched in 2022, provides new underwear to vulnerable women, including those who are homeless, fleeing domestic violence or living as refugees. “You can’t donate second-hand underwear,” explained Claire. “So this charity helps women who often only have what they’re wearing.”

Speaking after the challenge, Claire said, “I am aching all over but I am on cloud nine. It felt great in the end and we’ve raised over £11,000 for Let’s Get Our Knickers in a Twist – and we have a mountain of pants!”
